Job Description

Bellingham Technical College (BTC) is a well-respected institution located in Bellingham, Washington, dedicated to providing student-centered, high-quality professional technical education tailored to meet today's needs and tomorrow's opportunities. As a public technical college, BTC prides itself on fostering a diverse and inclusive environment where students, staff, and faculty collaborate to create a supportive and engaging campus community. The college is committed to creating and maintaining a welcoming campus that supports diversity, promotes a sense of community, provides an effective work and learning environment, and encourages respect for individuals of all backgrounds. BTC stands out not only for its educational offerings but also for its commitment to accessibility, equity, and inclusion, striving to accommodate the diverse needs of its student population. This aligns with its mission to deliver professional and technical education that equips learners for immediate entry into the workforce or for further academic pursuits.

The Facilities Department at BTC is currently accepting applications for temporary hourly Parking Attendant positions for the 2024-2025 academic year. These part-time, temporary hourly assignments are expected to commence in September 2024 and conclude on or before June 30, 2025. The positions offer flexible working hours, generally scheduled during the 7:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. shift for zero to four days per week, with potential availability for evening event work. It is important to note that hours are not guaranteed and will be contingent upon the department's needs and the academic calendar, with some months possibly having no available hours.

The role of Parking Attendant reports directly to the Safety Director and involves several responsibilities integral to maintaining a safe and orderly campus environment. The Parking Attendant is primarily tasked with patrolling campus parking areas, observing parking and traffic patterns, and issuing citations for parking violations. The attendant must ensure vehicles are parked lawfully and have valid parking permits, advise the Facilities Coordinator about temporary or permanent permit needs, and direct the flow of traffic during events and emergency responses. Additionally, the Parking Attendant may be involved in assisting with investigations of vehicle accidents or car prowls, responding promptly to campus call-backs within 15 minutes, and supporting broader campus safety efforts by participating in emergency management response activities.

This position requires adaptability, as attendants may be called upon to perform auxiliary duties such as snow removal, assisting stranded motorists, setting up campus signage, administering first aid as needed, and arranging equipment for meetings and events. Such tasks underscore the versatile nature of the role, placing the attendant as a key component in supporting campus functionality and safety.

Candidates interested in this position should expect work in varied weather conditions typical of the Pacific Northwest, including exposure to rain, heat, or cold, and physically demanding tasks such as lifting up to 50 pounds, prolonged standing, walking on hard surfaces, and occasional bending or stooping. Compensation for this role is $20.61 per hour, effective July 1, 2024, with benefits including paid sick leave as per Washington State law and access to an Employee Assistance Program that offers free counseling and referral services. This position does not include additional benefits beyond those stated.

As an equal opportunity employer, BTC is committed to recruiting employees who reflect the diverse backgrounds of the community it serves. The college values candidates who can foster a respectful and professional atmosphere, work effectively in diverse teams, and communicate positively with students, visitors, and campus personnel alike. Successful applicants will contribute to a safe and welcoming campus environment while fulfilling an essential operational role.
