Job Description

Norfolk, Virginia, is renowned as America's most authentic and urban waterfront city, offering a vibrant and dynamic living environment. It is home to the world's largest naval station and serves as the business, arts, and cultural center of Coastal Virginia. With its rich history, beautiful waterfront views, and a diverse community, Norfolk has consistently been rated as one of the top places to live, work, play, and raise a family by numerous publications. The city's commitment to fostering a supportive and inclusive community is reflected in its workforce initiatives that emphasize authenticity, uniqueness, and a shared mission to enhance the quality of life for its residents. The City of Norfolk provides its employees with competitive pay and strong retirement benefits, ensuring that working within the city government is both a personally and professionally rewarding experience. Employees are encouraged to make a real difference in the lives of others through their work and community engagement. The city's work environment prides itself on celebrating individuality while advancing collective goals, making it a truly special place to establish a meaningful career.

The City of Norfolk's Parking Division falls under the Department of General Services and operates as an enterprise fund responsible for managing over 19,000 public parking spaces. These spaces are distributed across 14 garages, 10 lots, and more than 500 on-street metered parking spots throughout the city. This extensive network supports the city’s need for accessible parking, ensuring both residents and visitors have convenient options. The Parking Division's role is critical in maintaining efficient city traffic flow and supporting local businesses and attractions by providing reliable and well-managed parking services. The organization is currently seeking to fill the position of a Cashier to join their dedicated team.

The Cashier position is primarily focused on performing billing and collections duties with accuracy and professionalism. This role demands excellent customer service skills as the incumbent will directly engage with patrons by providing directions, answering inquiries, and resolving issues related to parking fees and tickets. The Cashier will operate a computerized cash terminal to collect fees, calculate hourly parking rates, generate receipts, and verify validations. The role also involves completing necessary forms such as insufficient funds and lost ticket reports as well as emergency and accident documentation. Financial responsibilities include generating cash receipts, reconciling accounts, and maintaining accounts receivable to ensure financial accuracy and accountability. Additionally, the Cashier will assume various administrative tasks including processing payments, assisting with marketing promotions, handling mail, and maintaining records like scrapbooks and late notices. The position requires standing for extended periods and flexibility to work weekends, evenings, and holidays as needed. Although this is a part-time role averaging 19.5 hours per week with seasonal schedule variations, it offers the opportunity to contribute significantly to the efficient operation of city services and to be part of a team dedicated to improving the urban experience in Norfolk. This role does not include benefits, but it provides a meaningful civic role within a supportive work environment that values commitment and community impact.
