Job Description
Volunteers of America Northern California and Northern Nevada (VOA-NCNN) is a well-established nonprofit organization with a rich history dating back to 1911. As a ministry of service, VOA-NCNN employs nearly 500 dedicated professionals committed to helping vulnerable individuals and families rebuild their lives and reach their full potential. The organization is one of the largest providers of social services in the Northern California and Northern Nevada region. It operates more than 40 programs that encompass housing, employment services, substance abuse recovery, and supportive services for families, individuals, veterans, seniors, and youth. VOA-NCNN provides emergency shelter or housing to over 4,000 men, women, and children every night, reflecting its profound community impact and dedication to addressing social challenges effectively.

The organization is now recruiting full-time Line Cooks for its Family Shelter program located at Parker House, an 85-bed facility that offers short-term emergency housing (up to 30 days) and intensive supportive services to homeless families with dependent children. This is a full-time position, with employees working 30 or more hours per week. The compensation for this role is set at $23.20 per hour.
The Line Cook position plays a vital role within the Parker House program. The primary responsibility is to prepare and serve nutritious meals adhering to program standards. The Line Cook ensures food is prepared in a safe, sanitary manner and that all kitchen activities comply with health and safety guidelines. The role requires not only culinary skills but also a compassionate approach to service delivery, as it involves interaction with program participants who are experiencing homelessness and other challenges.
In addition to meal preparation, the Line Cook is tasked with maintaining an organized and clean kitchen environment, ensuring all ingredients and supplies are properly stored and labeled to optimize workflow. The Line Cook contributes to daily program maintenance, communicates effectively with management and staff, assists in the training and development of new kitchen staff, and actively pursues personal development through ongoing learning and certification.

Job Requirements
- Two or more years of related experience
- Ability to communicate and understand oral and written instructions
- Knowledge of issues related to homelessness, substance abuse, and diverse populations
- Current Serv Safe certification or willingness to obtain within 30 days
- Valid California driver’s license
- Ability to meet insurance carrier guidelines
- Pass all background clearances
- CPR and First Aid certification within 90 days
- Ability to work irregular hours including weekends and holidays
- Ability to lift and move over 50 pounds
- Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, and stoop throughout the workday
- Ability to travel between locations
- Able to climb stairs as required
Job Qualifications
- Two or more years of related cooking experience
- Demonstrated ability to communicate and comprehend oral and written instructions
- Experience working with diverse populations including individuals facing homelessness, substance abuse, and disabilities
- Knowledge of principles, procedures, and equipment used in large-scale food preparation
- Familiarity with kitchen sanitation and safety measures
- Basic knowledge of diets and nutrition
- Current Serv Safe certification or ability to obtain within 30 days
- Valid California driver’s license and ability to meet insurance guidelines
- Ability to pass required background checks
- CPR and First Aid certification within 90 days
- Strong oral and written communication skills
- Ability to motivate and assist others
- Good organizational, analytical, and decision-making skills
- Competency with computer skills
Job Duties
- Prepare, cook, and serve meals in an institutional kitchen facility
- Perform duties in a safe and sanitary manner using proper food handling and preparation techniques
- Operate kitchen equipment safely and follow safety procedures
- Complete daily prep lists and organize ingredients for accessibility
- Prepare simple dishes such as sides, salads, sauces, soups, gravies, and bake bread, cakes, and pastries
- Cut and carve meats, fish, and poultry
- Maintain cleanliness of kitchen, dining area, and equipment
- Ensure proper storage and stocking of food, chemicals, packaging, and supplies
- Notify management of workflow problems
- Adhere to staffing schedules and communicate with service providers
- Assist in training and orientation of new staff
- Participate in ongoing training and certification
- Continuously improve technical and interpersonal skills
- Attend staff meetings and complete required certifications
