Job Description

St Augustine Cathedral is a prominent Roman Catholic religious institution located in Tucson, Arizona. Serving as a vital spiritual and community hub, the Cathedral is dedicated to upholding and promoting the teachings and values of the Catholic Church. It operates within a framework that not only facilitates worship and pastoral care but also extends its ministry through various roles that support the daily functions of the parish. One such essential role is that of the Parish Cook, a position that plays a key part in nurturing both the physical and spiritual well-being of the clergy and guests through proper meal preparation and hospitality.

The Parish Cook at St Augustine Cathedral is a part-time, non-exempt role classified under Salary Grade 20. This position involves close work under the guidance of the Pastor or Parish Administrator and requires a commitment not only to culinary excellence but also to living in accordance with Catholic teachings and moral conduct. The role demands a person who embodies the Gospel's spirit in both their professional responsibilities and personal life, aligning with the Church's mission to "live in a manner worthy of the call you have received" (Ephesians 4:1).

As a Parish Cook, the individual is entrusted with preparing meals for the Pastor, other clergy members, and visiting guests, ensuring that each meal is nutritious, well-balanced, and prepared within budgetary constraints. The role extends beyond cooking; it includes planning menus, purchasing food and household items, and maintaining a clean and hygienic kitchen environment in strict adherence to health, sanitation, and safety standards. This position is integral to supporting the parish’s spiritual and pastoral mission by providing a welcoming environment through the ministry of hospitality.

The ideal candidate for the Parish Cook role is expected to have a comprehensive understanding of modern cooking procedures and possess at least one year of cooking experience in a commercial or private environment. Being a part of a religious organization, the candidate must demonstrate unwavering commitment to the Catholic Church's principles both in their personal and professional conduct. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are vital, as the role demands professional and courteous interaction with clergy, fellow employees, and guests. The Parish Cook must also be a self-starter, well organized, and capable of managing multiple tasks simultaneously with a sense of urgency.

Physical and mental capabilities are essential for this role; the Parish Cook should have coordination, manual dexterity, and visual ability consistent with a typical household environment. They must be able to perform activities such as walking, sitting, standing, stooping, reaching, and carrying as required in the performance of their duties. Flexibility in working hours, including the possibility of weekend and overtime work, is necessary to meet the needs of the parish schedule.

St Augustine Cathedral is committed to maintaining a safe and respectful work environment, which is reflected in its zero-tolerance policy regarding abuse and boundary violations concerning minors. All employees, including the Parish Cook, are required to pass background checks, including criminal, credit, and history verifications, ensuring the safety and integrity of the parish community.

This role is not just about cooking but is a ministry in service of the Church and its mission. It requires adherence to the highest standards of Catholic moral conduct and professionalism, making it a unique and rewarding opportunity for those looking to contribute meaningfully to the life of the parish and support its spiritual leadership.
