The role of Research & Innovation Director of Food/Beverage Packaging is a pivotal leadership position within Danone North America. This position co-leads the vision, strategy, and execution of consumer-centric, future-forward packaging in partnership with the VP of Packaging. The Director’s primary focus is to drive business growth, enhance competitiveness, and advance sustainability and productivity goals through innovative packaging solutions. This role elevates packaging as a strategic lever that drives superior consumer experiences, unlocks innovation opportunities, improves shelf performance, and shapes the next generation of materials and technologies.
The Director will bring deep technical expertise, strong design-to-scale capabilities, and the ability to influence cross-functionally across the enterprise. As the primary contact for the General Manager of the Food/Beverage business, the Director will collaborate with multiple stakeholders internally and externally to deliver packaging that is safe, efficient, aesthetically delightful, and circular. They will lead and inspire a high-performing team focused on packaging excellence across the U.S. and global networks. This role offers an exciting opportunity to shape strategic growth, sustainability initiatives, and business delivery models through innovative packaging leadership.
The salary range for this position is $146,000 to $210,000 USD, depending on experience, location, and market conditions. Job Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in engineering or science such as Packaging, Mechanical, Chemical, Materials
- 10-15+ years experience in packaging, engineering, materials science or related field preferably within food, beverage or CPG
- Proven leadership of cross-functional teams
- Strong problem-solving skills
- Excellent communication skills
- Ability to travel approximately 25%
- Ability to make smart, timely decisions in ambiguity
- Experience in end-to-end packaging leadership
- Strategic mindset with understanding of sustainability regulations and consumer trends
Job Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in engineering or science such as Packaging, Mechanical, Chemical, Materials
- Preferred Master’s degree in Packaging, Environmental Science, Materials Engineering or related field
- 10-15+ years experience in packaging, engineering, materials science or related technical field preferably within food, beverage or CPG industry
- Proven leadership of cross-functional teams partnering with Marketing, Manufacturing, R&I, Procurement, Quality, Supply Chain, Regulatory, Design and external partners
- Demonstrated ability in creating, developing, validating, scaling and protecting packaging solutions
- Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to simplify complexity
- Strong business acumen with understanding of R&I value including growth, productivity, risk mitigation, quality and speed
- Exceptional communication and storytelling skills
- Ability to travel approximately 25% annually
Job Duties
- Serve as an enterprise leader shaping growth-driving innovation and renovation pipeline
- Develop and execute 3-5 year consumer- and business-centric packaging strategy including innovation, cost transformation, and sustainability roadmaps
- Elevate packaging as a competitive advantage improving product superiority, brand equity, speed to market, and cost position
- Translate business priorities into actionable R&I plans delivering measurable results
- Ensure cohesive operation of product and pack R&I teams
- Strengthen end-to-end packaging capabilities from concept to lifecycle optimization
- Build future-ready competencies in advanced materials, circular systems, intelligent and connected packaging, automation and digital simulation, consumer experience engineering and spec defining
- Create and implement best-in-class packaging standards, validation processes and performance KPIs
- Increase accountability for business performance through portfolio choices, prioritization, risk management and budget stewardship
- Lead packaging strategy for new business models and emerging channels
- Drive speed, rigor and excellence from lab to large-scale commercialization
- Partner with Brand, R&I, Supply Chain, Procurement, Quality and Sustainability teams
- Engage in global packaging network leveraging insights, capabilities and best practices
- Build strategic external partnerships with suppliers, startups, universities and technology organizations
- Lead and grow high-performing team of packaging engineers and managers fostering curiosity, accountability, transparency and collaboration
- Develop future-ready talent and build an inclusive, inspired team culture
- Coach and mentor to build next generation packaging experts and leaders
