The position of Overnight Cook II at Bell Hospital plays a crucial role in ensuring the nutritional needs of patients and hospital staff are met with high standards of food quality and safety. This full-time role involves preparing large volumes of food overnight, specifically catering to patients’ therapeutic diets and the hospital staff menu. The shift times available for this role are from 10pm to 6:30am and 8pm to 4:30am, making it ideal for candidates who are comfortable working overnight hours.

The Overnight Cook II is responsible for the preparation of food items such as soups, meats, vegetables, and desserts according to standardized recipes and daily production sheets. This role requires technical cooking skills, attention to detail, and the ability to organize and prioritize tasks efficiently in a fast-paced environment. In addition to cooking, the Overnight Cook II ensures food safety by adhering to HACCP guidelines, proper storage, and sanitation practices. They also have a role in inventory management, including portioning, wrapping, labelling, and dating food items for patients, cafeteria, or catering services.

Those employed in this role must demonstrate critical thinking to adapt to the varied needs of the hospital's food service demands and have strong interpersonal skills to work effectively within a team. Candidates will also be required to test and evaluate new recipes and may need to adjust their working hours occasionally to support additional cafeteria or catering needs.

This position requires prior experience in a high-volume food preparation environment such as a restaurant or institutional kitchen, with a preference for candidates who have at least one year of relevant experience. Education requirements include a high school diploma or GED. The candidate must also possess basic literacy and numeracy skills to understand recipes, follow procedures, and manage inventory accurately.

Job Duties

  • Completes the cooking process of menu items requiring basic technical skills such as soups meats vegetables desserts and other foodstuffs using daily worksheets and standardized recipes
  • Demonstrates competence in the areas of critical thinking interpersonal relationships and technical skills
  • Demonstrates ability to provide care service safely and efficiently for the care of each patient
  • Performs duties in Food Production and or the Cafeteria
  • Organizes daily production in unit
  • Prepares food for inventory and or service including portioning wrapping labeling dating food items prepared for patients cafeteria and or catering according to unit standards
  • Ensures proper storage and rotation of inventories in refrigerators and freezers following HACCP and department standards
  • Maintains a safe and sanitary food preparation service environment per unit standards
  • Tests and evaluates new recipes
  • Adjusts work hours to early or late to prepare needed Cafeteria or Catering products
  • Must be able to perform the professional clinical and or technical competencies of the assigned unit or department
