The role of a Baker at Hy-Vee is a vital position within the bakery department, responsible for baking and preparing a variety of bakery products to fulfill customer orders and replenish store displays. This position is non-exempt and demands physical stamina, as it requires handling products and equipment with some manual exertion, including lifting up to 50 pounds occasionally. Job Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Over six months of related bakery experience
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally
  • Ability to perform physical activities including stooping, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions
  • Willingness to work overnight shifts
  • Must pass pre-employment drug screening

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Over six months to one year of similar or related bakery experience
  • Ability to solve practical problems with limited standardization
  • Basic arithmetic skills including fractions, decimals, and percentages
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service with a friendly demeanor
  • Strong communication skills including answering phones and taking orders
  • Knowledge of bakery equipment and proper sanitation procedures
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and manage time effectively
  • Leadership skills to oversee bakery clerks and apprentices

Job Duties

  • Provide prompt, efficient, and friendly customer service by exhibiting care, concern, and patience
  • Smile and greet customers in a friendly manner
  • Assist customers by escorting them to products, securing out-of-reach items, and taking product orders by phone
  • Check orders and set production schedules
  • Prepare makeup, bake, and fry bakery products as needed
  • Review product freshness and quality, pulling stale items
  • Inspect incoming product quality and quantity
  • Operate bakery equipment safely and report maintenance issues
  • Maintain proper signage and safety standards in the bakery
  • Lead bakery clerks and prioritize orders
  • Practice proper sanitation and maintain clean work areas
  • Adhere to company policies and maintain punctuality
  • Order supplies and merchandise for the department
  • Re-merchandise shelves and manage outdated products
  • Write department schedules and manage staffing in the bakery manager’s absence
  • Assist in other store areas as needed
