Job Description

ORBIS is a respected company specializing in marine mechanical trades, particularly focused on providing high-quality engineering services for submarine systems. The company is known for its commitment to excellence, safety, and innovation within the defense sector, working closely on critical naval equipment and ensuring the highest standards in craftsmanship and technical expertise. ORBIS’s professional atmosphere promotes a culture of teamwork, continuous improvement, and respect for all employees, with a comprehensive benefits package and competitive salary structure designed to attract and retain top talent in this specialized industry.

The role of Outside Marine Machinist Engineering Technician-Torpedo Tube Assembler at ORBIS is a specialized technical position requiring hands-on expertise in the assembly, inspection, installation, and maintenance of submarine torpedo tube systems. This is a critical role ensuring the operational readiness and safety of submarine torpedo launching mechanisms through precise and methodical work. The technician will handle components such as breech doors, muzzle doors, interlocks, shutter doors, slide valves, and various parts of the torpedo handling and shipping systems. Working according to professional trade standards and specific instructions provided by EB, the individual must apply mechanical skills and knowledge to assemble and properly install these systems.

This position involves installing foundations for operating machinery and principal structures/components, adjusting, setting, repairing, or replacing control, regulating, or safety devices including meters, gauges, valves, governors, and automatic alarms. The machinist must be adept at using various portable and fixed machine tools such as boring bars, milling machines, facing machines, and drill presses. The role is detail-oriented and demands precision measurement using tools like height gauges, depth gauges, calipers, Vernier scales, and micrometers.

Candidates for this position must have substantial experience—at least four years—as an outside machinist working specifically on submarine torpedo tubes and handling systems. The work is mostly performed on US Navy ships or in dedicated marine mechanical environments, and the machinist must demonstrate successful execution of trade-related tasks under high standards.

Educationally, applicants should have at least a high school diploma, vocational school diploma, or a GED certificate. Additionally, the candidate must have two years of trade experience focusing on torpedo tube work on US Navy ships or should have completed a formal trade study program offered by community colleges, technical schools, military training, company training programs, or apprenticeships in marine mechanical trades. This blend of practical experience and formal education is crucial for success in this role.

Because this work is sensitive and involves national security, the applicant must be a US citizen with the ability to obtain and maintain a Secret Security Clearance, providing assurance of reliability and trustworthiness. ORBIS is an equal opportunity employer and values diversity, ensuring all qualified candidates receive consideration regardless of race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, or veteran status.

Overall, this role offers an opportunity to work within a professional and supportive company that prides itself on high technical standards and employee welfare, with an excellent benefits package and competitive compensation to reflect the skill and dedication required for this challenging and vital work.
