Duke Health Integrated Practice extends the institution’s reach through over 110 primary and specialty outpatient clinics across North Carolina. Within this network, the position of Certified Ophthalmic Technician is offered at the Eye Center in Chapel Hill, NC. This role is pivotal in supporting ophthalmologists by conducting precise diagnostic tests critical for identifying and managing a wide variety of eye conditions. Employment with Duke Health is full-time and includes incentives such as a $5,000 commitment bonus and $2,000 in relocation assistance for qualifying candidates.
The Certified Ophthalmic Technician will assist physicians and technical support staff by performing preliminary eye examinations, including visual field testing, tonometry, and slit lamp evaluations. This position demands attention to detail and a strong understanding of ophthalmic procedures to accurately collect and document patient data. Responsibilities also include fitting and instructing patients with contact lenses, maintaining and calibrating ophthalmic instruments, preparing patients for surgery, and supporting research activities within the department. The role requires excellent interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with patients, alleviate concerns, and coordinate care efficiently. Job Requirements
- Completion of ophthalmic technician training
- Certification as a certified ophthalmic technician by JCAHPO
- Ability to perform diagnostic tests and use ophthalmic instruments
- Experience in patient interaction and data collection
- Ability to assist in surgical preparation

Job Qualifications
- Completion of ophthalmic technician training
- Certification as a certified ophthalmic technician by the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology (JCAHPO)
- Strong knowledge of ophthalmic diagnostic tests and equipment
- Ability to perform precise measurements and examinations
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Experience in assisting with ophthalmic surgical procedures
- Ability to maintain and calibrate specialized instruments
- Familiarity with patient data management
- Commitment to compassionate patient care
- Willingness to participate in research activities
Job Duties
- Perform preliminary screening examinations for physician review including central and peripheral visual field tests, ocular motility tests, color vision tests, pharmacological pupil tests, tonometry, tonography and tensilon tonography tests
- Examine the cornea, lens and anterior chamber of the eye using a slit lamp and note variations from normal
- Measure acuity of patient with and without glasses for distance and near vision, obtain optical and lensometry measurements, record findings on patient chart
- Obtain topographical measurements of the eye, assist with contact lens fitting and instruct patients on care and use
- Direct patient flow, obtain medical and personal data, screen patients for conditions, arrange laboratory and other tests, alleviate patient and family concerns
- Screen walk-in patients, emergency patients and calls, administer electro-retinogram, electro-oculogram tests and specular microscopy
- Calibrate and maintain instruments including bio-microscopes, lensometer, keratometer, slit lamp and tonometers
- Sterilize and set up instruments for surgical procedures, assist with minor office surgery, laser treatments and operating room surgery
- Assist in preparation of microbiological specimens and various research studies
- Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein
