The role operates on a fixed weekend night schedule with hours from Friday and Saturday, 5:30 pm to 7:00 am, and Sunday from 6:00 pm to Monday 7:00 am.
The Operations Technician I at WaterOne is an essential role responsible for the operation of advanced water treatment and distribution processes. This role demands a highly technical skill set involving routine operational decisions about process chemistry, chemical dosing, mechanical equipment functionality, and managing the water distribution network efficiently. The technician works diligently to meet or exceed all applicable federal and state water quality standards and adheres to Board policies and goals aimed at maintaining the highest system integrity and security. The position involves close monitoring and operation of Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems and computer-based process controls to maintain system stability and quality. Duties include balancing flows to various basins and reservoirs, maintaining system water storage levels, and ensuring the continuous effective chemical treatment of water using specialized equipment such as ozone generators and natural gas backup power systems.
Additionally, the Operations Technician I is responsible for troubleshooting mechanical and electrical equipment, conducting process chemical laboratory analyses, maintaining reagent inventories, and participating in the installation and calibration of new technology. The technician acts promptly in emergencies, including main breaks and equipment malfunctions, coordinating with other personnel to restore operations swiftly. The role requires strict adherence to safety protocols, including the handling of hazardous chemicals, proper use of safety gear such as respirators and self-contained breathing apparatus, and full compliance with hazardous waste management regulations. Physical demands are significant, requiring the ability to work in varying environmental conditions including extreme temperatures and elevated heights, with a necessity to use personal protective equipment appropriately. Job Requirements
- High school diploma or GED
- Valid Class I Kansas Water Supply System Operator Certificate within eighteen months of employment
- Valid driver’s license with compliance to WaterOne driving standards
- Ability to pass post-offer medical exam including drug screen and background check
- Ability to work weekend night shifts including Friday and Saturday 5:30 pm - 7:00 am and Sunday 6:00 pm - Monday 7:00 am
- Availability for on-call rotations and extended hours
- Ability to use personal protective equipment including respirators and SCBA
- Ability to work outdoors in extreme weather conditions
- Physical ability to lift and move up to 40 lbs occasionally and to work at heights up to 15 feet
Job Qualifications
- Possess a high school diploma or GED
- Possess a valid Class I Kansas Water Supply System Operator Certificate within eighteen months of employment
- Possess a valid driver’s license and meet WaterOne driving standards
- Ability to comprehend and learn PLC-based microprocessors
- Knowledge of hazardous chemical handling
- Ability to troubleshoot and calibrate chemical feed machines
- Ability to read and interpret technical manuals
- Ability to work effectively as part of a skilled team
- Ability to make sound decisions under high-stress situations
- Effective oral and written communication skills
Job Duties
- Operate and monitor daily water treatment and distribution processes
- Handle Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system operations and prepare computer-generated management reports
- Troubleshoot chemical treatment problems, instrumentation, mechanical and electrical equipment
- Operate ozone generation and natural gas generator systems
- Respond to emergencies such as main breaks and equipment outages
- Safely handle hazardous chemicals and gases using appropriate safety equipment
- Perform routine process chemical laboratory analyses and maintain laboratory quality control
