Job Description

The Chattanooga Area Regional Transportation Authority (CARTA) is a premier public transportation provider serving the Chattanooga, Tennessee area. Established to facilitate efficient, safe, and accessible transit services, CARTA plays an essential role in connecting communities and enhancing mobility options for residents and visitors alike. Known for its dedication to quality service and safety, CARTA operates a comprehensive network of fixed-route bus services and shuttles designed to meet the diverse needs of the Chattanooga metropolitan area. By adhering rigorously to federal, state, and local regulations, and maintaining a strong commitment to customer service excellence, CARTA continues to build its reputation as a dependable and progressive transit authority. The organization fosters a collaborative work environment where innovation and safety are prioritized to achieve operational excellence in all aspects of public transportation.

The role of Operations Supervisor within CARTA's Transportation Department is a full-time, exempt position offering an annual salary of $58,656. Situated at CARTA's primary facility at 1617 Wilcox Blvd. in Chattanooga, TN, the Operations Supervisor acts as a crucial link between management and transit operators, ensuring the safe, reliable, and efficient movement of transit vehicles. This supervisory position reports directly to the Director of Transportation and encompasses a multifaceted responsibility that blends on-road oversight with dispatch coordination through advanced Computer-Aided Dispatch (CAD) technology.

Key responsibilities include real-time monitoring and managing fixed-route and shuttle bus services to maintain schedule adherence and optimize route performance. The Operations Supervisor actively supports vehicle operators by providing coaching, addressing performance concerns, and facilitating training initiatives aimed at reinforcing safety and customer service standards. This role demands decisive action in emergency situations such as accidents or breakdowns, requiring effective communication and coordination with emergency responders and law enforcement. Additionally, the supervisor conducts detailed investigations into incidents or complaints to recommend and implement corrective measures.

This position requires not only thorough knowledge of transit operations and regulatory compliance but also exceptional leadership skills and the ability to maintain composure under pressure. The Operations Supervisor enforces CARTA’s work policies, safety regulations, and ADA guidelines while maintaining precise records concerning operational activities. Working in a dynamic transit environment, the incumbent is expected to balance operational efficiency with the highest standards of passenger safety and service quality.

Beyond the daily operational duties, the Operations Supervisor holds supervisory authority over subordinate employees within the transportation division, asserting leadership and accountability to uphold CARTA’s mission and values. The role demands adaptability and a proactive approach to solving operational challenges, making it an ideal opportunity for professionals seeking to contribute significantly to public transit excellence in Chattanooga.
