This full-time, exempt position is based in the USA and offers an annual salary range of approximately $60,000 per year. The role of Supervisor, overseeing dish room, EPA, pre-load, liquor/beverage, and transportation areas, is pivotal in ensuring the efficient completion of all activities supporting Gate Gourmet's catering efforts. The Supervisor leads a team of up to 75 employees, primarily unionized, with an average direct report count of 35. Responsibilities include managing workflow, maintaining production quality standards, enforcing company policies, overseeing safety and compliance with customer and regulatory requirements, and ensuring accurate inventory control. This position also involves preparing management reports such as attendance, HACCP, and labor reports to support operational transparency.

The Supervisor acts as a knowledgeable resource regarding airline customer specification books and ensures all products are coded according to company procedures. A key part of the role is to collaborate with the maintenance staff to uphold preventive maintenance schedules for machinery and to promptly report equipment issues to prevent operational disruptions. The position includes controlling food and controllable costs, improving unit performance alongside management teams, and maintaining employee morale and retention through coaching, counseling, and corrective actions in alignment with union agreements. Effective manpower planning and compliance with wage and hour policies, including rest and meal breaks, are essential duties to maintain smooth operations.

The ideal candidate possesses strong leadership and communication skills, the ability to manage a large team, and is comfortable working across various employee levels. They are adept at providing constructive feedback and training to enhance staff performance while upholding productivity and minimizing labor and food expenses. The ability to innovate and adapt operational changes is crucial for continuous improvement within the unit. Proficiency in Microsoft Office and certification in ServSafe are required, with bilingual skills (English and Spanish, Chinese Mandarin, Vietnamese, Hindi, or Polish) considered a plus.

Job Requirements

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • associates degree preferred
  • 2+ years supervisory experience working in a high volume, manufacturing, food production, restaurant or catering environment or equivalent experience preferred
  • strong and effective leadership skills
  • ability to successfully manage a staff of 30+ hourly employees
  • current or previous labor relations experience is a plus
  • comfortable with all levels of employees and ability to drive positive program change

Job Duties

  • Responsible for leading and directing all dish room, liquor/beverage process employees
  • ensures quality production standards are maintained for all accounts
  • maintains company policies and procedures as well as specification books for airline customers and serve as a knowledgeable resource relative to those policies
  • prepares management reports such as attendance, HACCP and labor reports as required
  • responsible for safety, quality and compliance with customer specifications and regulatory requirements and company policies and procedures
  • ensures specifications, airline diagrams, and other standards are accurate according to the airline specifications
  • ensures that all products are coded according to Gate Gourmet procedures
  • conducts inventory of Gate Gourmet products and customer materials to ensure proper usage and minimization of waste
  • completes required requisitions for the storeroom to ensure adequate supply is maintained
  • responsible for maintaining daily temperature logs and other logs and reports as required
  • works with maintenance staff to ensure preventive maintenance of machinery according to schedules, reports maintenance and repair issues in timely manner
  • controls food cost and other controllable costs
  • works with management staff to improve performance of the unit
  • responsible for performance evaluation, coaching, counseling and preparing corrective action for employees and liaises appropriately with HR and other support functions
  • manages work flow balancing - the division of responsibilities amongst employees on each shift
  • determines when and whether to call employees in to cover staffing needs such as sick calls, vacation relief, medical leaves, volume changes, etc.
  • in conjunction with department leaders determines number of employees needed by shift
  • ensures compliance with company wage and hour policy, including ensuring employees get the rest and meal breaks and ensuring company processes are followed
  • trains and monitors employees on proper work procedures to ensure maximum productivity with minimum labor and food expenses
  • monitors daily manpower planning and schedules employees
  • responsible for employee retention and reducing employee turnover
  • responsible for coaching, counseling and preparing corrective actions for employees in compliance with the applicable union/collective bargaining agreement(s)
  • reviews and ensures employees in chain of command are in correct cost centers and correct job titles
  • reviews and ensures union represented employees’ pay rates are correct based on wage scales and seniority
  • compliance with all company required policies, procedures and processes including but not limited to required training
