The role of an On-Call Receptionist at TowneBank is a vital position that requires flexibility, professionalism, and a commitment to excellent customer service. This role involves traveling across multiple branch and department locations within the Hampton Roads area to provide coverage as needed. The On-Call Receptionist is expected to be highly adaptable, as the position demands readiness to work during holidays, cover for vacations, medical absences, or any other unforeseen gaps in staffing. This means often working with little notice and the ability to respond promptly to spur-of-the-moment staffing needs.

As the first point of contact for members, the On-Call Receptionist is expected to maintain a professional appearance and demeanor, greet members warmly, understand their needs, and direct them to the appropriate personnel or department efficiently. Operating the main telephone switchboard with skill and friendliness is a key responsibility, as well as assisting with routine office tasks such as typing correspondence, assisting with copy projects, and other duties that support the smooth operation of the branch or department. Additionally, this individual must be well-informed about TowneBank’s branch locations, hours, contact numbers, and key personnel to provide consistent, accurate information to callers and visitors.

Physical demands include the ability to travel between locations, spend a significant amount of time seated as well as walking, escorting customers within the branch, and assisting elderly or handicapped visitors. Handling office equipment such as fax and copy machines regularly, organizing supplies, and maintaining customer hospitality by preparing refreshments are part of the daily tasks.

The work environment is typical of a business office, with the receptionist area located near main entrance doors which may expose the position to changing air temperatures throughout the day. The successful On-Call Receptionist must possess exemplary customer service and telephone skills, combined with reliability and flexibility to meet on-call work demands. Experience with computer applications such as Microsoft Word and Excel is preferred, though not mandatory.

Job Requirements

  • Must be able to travel to locations throughout the Hampton Roads territory
  • Ability to sit 60 percent of the time
  • Must be able to walk to teller line and other co-workers several times daily
  • Ability to escort customers including elderly and handicapped
  • Must operate office equipment including copy and fax machines
  • Capable of maintaining and organizing supplies requiring lifting up to 10 pounds, reaching, bending and stooping
  • Must prepare and monitor customer refreshments
  • Flexibility to work on-call, including holidays and unplanned absences

Job Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Previous customer service experience preferred
  • Basic computer skills, including familiarity with Word and Excel
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Excellent telephone skills
  • Ability to work flexibly and be dependable

Job Duties

  • Drives to wherever needed to fill in at any and all branch and department locations throughout the Hampton Roads area including Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Suffolk and Chesapeake
  • Agrees to work when called upon including holidays, vacations, medical leaves and other absences
  • Displays a professional appearance and behavior
  • Welcomes members to TowneBank, determines the nature of their business and directs them to the appropriate person or department
  • Operates the department’s or branch’s main telephone switchboard and assists callers by transferring them or taking messages
  • Becomes familiar with TowneBank’s locations, hours, telephone numbers and individuals to answer routine questions
  • Types memos, correspondence, reports and other documents as needed
  • Assists the branch or department team with day-to-day duties and copy projects
  • Obeys all applicable federal laws, rules, and regulations relating to Anti-Money Laundering (AML) including the Bank Secrecy Act (BSA)
