Job Description

The Washington State Department of Corrections (DOC) is a pivotal agency dedicated to enhancing public safety by positively transforming lives. The Department of Corrections Reentry Division is currently seeking an On-Call Cook 2 to join the team at the Bellingham Reentry Center in Bellingham, WA. This position may also be appointed at the Cook 1 level depending on the candidate’s qualifications. The role is essential for preparing and serving nutritious, high-quality meals that meet the Department's certified meal plans and adhere to state and federal standards. As a Cook 2, you will be directly contributing to the safety and rehabilitation of residents by ensuring access to healthy, balanced meals aligned with nutritional guidelines and dietary needs including medical and religious diets.

This position offers a salary range from $22.40 to $29.94 per hour, with opportunities for wage increases beyond July 2026. The position supports the Division’s mission by managing proper food ordering, preparation, storage, serving, and sanitation within budgetary constraints. Your work will directly impact the wellbeing of residents undergoing reentry by providing them with sustenance that supports their health as they prepare to reintegrate into society. The Cook 2 role involves using progressive cooking techniques to minimize waste, practicing high standards of food safety and hygiene, and ensuring compliance with health department standards. In addition to food preparation, the role requires inventory management, tool control, and safe operation and maintenance of kitchen equipment.

Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Previous experience in a cooking or food service role
  • Knowledge of state and local health department sanitation and safety standards
  • Ability to perform basic math calculations
  • Capacity to work in a correctional facility environment
  • Willingness to undergo background and criminal record history checks
  • Ability to pass a pre-employment drug test
  • Ability to provide professional references
  • Ability to handle potentially hazardous situations
  • Willingness to comply with DOC’s policies including use of OC pepper spray
  • Ability to take a TB skin test within 60 days of hire
  • Ability to provide proof of identity and eligibility to work in the United States
  • Willingness to participate in respiratory protection program if required
  • Willingness to request credential evaluation if degree was earned outside the U.S.

Job Duties

  • Participate in the preparation and service of all food on a shift
  • Perform mathematical calculations by converting recipes to determine the appropriate quantity of food products required
  • Ensure adherence to appropriate portion control protocols
  • Check food product during and after preparation to maintain quality and quantity standards
  • Understand and apply rethermalization processes if appropriate
  • Practice and perform progressive cooking techniques to reduce waste
  • Follow safety practices to avoid hazards and accidents
  • Prepare special diets as required for medical or religious needs
  • Maintain and model the highest standards of personal hygiene
  • Keep work surfaces and equipment clean following state and local sanitation standards
  • Maintain and track knife and tool inventory
  • Maintain and organize accurate food inventories and ensure stock rotation
  • Receive, store and distribute raw and prepared food products per required standards
  • Receive, store and use chemicals and cleaning supplies appropriately
  • Prepare and submit work orders for equipment repair
  • Execute and maintain tool and key control processes according to DOC policy
  • Ensure safe handling, operation, care, use, and cleaning of kitchen equipment
  • Perform other duties as assigned
