Job Description
Bend-La Pine Schools is a prominent educational institution committed to fostering equity within its community. Situated in Central Oregon, Bend-La Pine Schools serves a diverse student population across multiple campuses, dedicating itself to providing an inclusive and supportive learning environment. The district places a strong emphasis on equity, recognizing that treating all individuals the same is not sufficient to meet diverse needs. Instead, Bend-La Pine Schools actively works to remove barriers and promote inclusive practices so that every student has the opportunity to fully benefit from the educational programs offered. This core value of equity influences all aspects of the district's policies, regulations, programs, operations, practices, and allocation of resources.
The Nutrition Services I - Server position within Bend-La Pine Schools is a vital role within the district's nutrition services department. This is an entry-level position designed for individuals passionate about contributing to the health and well-being of students through food service. As a Nutrition Services I - Server, you will perform essential food serving, cooking, and kitchen cleaning duties. Your work will help ensure that students receive nutritious meals in a safe, clean, and welcoming environment. Under direct supervision, you will handle routine responsibilities such as food preparation, serving, handling meal counts and deposits, maintaining cleanliness, and adhering to safety and sanitation standards. You will also interact regularly with students, school staff, and the public, requiring good communication and interpersonal skills.
The role does not require advanced culinary skills or extensive prior knowledge, making it an excellent opportunity for individuals seeking entry into the nutrition or food services field. However, the position demands a strong work ethic, attention to detail, ability to follow clear procedures, and physical stamina to perform tasks such as lifting, standing, and walking for extended periods. The Nutrition Services I - Server collaborates closely with Nutrition Services II Technicians, supervisors, and other team members to carry out food service operations reliably and safely.
This position involves working in a school cafeteria or kitchen setting where food safety, sanitation, and nutrition standards must always be upheld in accordance with USDA rules. Duties include processing free and reduced applications, handling money accurately, using meal software, selling ala carte and snack items, and ensuring the kitchen is properly opened and closed at designated times. Additional responsibilities include supervising student helpers, maintaining necessary records, and assisting with inventory management to assure adequate food supplies.
Bend-La Pine Schools supports an equitable and inclusive hiring process, encouraging candidates from all backgrounds to apply. The district values diversity and recognizes that the best candidate may come from a less traditional background. The position requires basic education equivalent to a high school diploma or GED and offers training to help you succeed in the role. Additionally, obtaining an Oregon Food Handler's Permit or maintaining a current ServSafe certification is necessary to meet health and safety compliance. This opportunity offers meaningful work contributing to the well-being and nutrition of students in a supportive school community environment.
