The salary follows the Level 6 Nutrition Services Salary Schedule with increments based on experience within the Washington State public school system.

The role is responsible for the coordination, supervision, and operation of a secondary school kitchen serving over 400 meals daily to students and staff. This position requires a combination of independent decision-making and teamwork to ensure the preparation and serving of nutritious, high-quality meals that support students’ nutritional needs as part of their overall education. The kitchen manager ensures adherence to all food safety guidelines, nutritional standards, and accounting protocols to maintain a self-supporting nutrition program consistent with budgetary goals. The role involves overseeing kitchen staff, managing inventory, maintaining compliance with health and safety regulations, and interacting professionally with students, school personnel, and the public. This position also includes responsibilities such as training staff on Nutrition Services policies and procedures, coordinating kitchen operations during school openings and closings each year, and fulfilling additional related duties as required. Successful candidates are expected to be adaptable, positive, and committed to professional growth through ongoing training and feedback. The kitchen environment involves regular physical activity, including lifting up to 30 pounds, standing for extended periods, and working safely around kitchen equipment. This position provides instrumental support to the school’s mission by ensuring students receive healthy meals in a safe and efficient manner, contributing directly to their academic success and well-being.

Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • three years of specific work experience in school food service
  • valid Food Handler's Permit
  • hepatitis A vaccination or waiver
  • current fingerprint record on file
  • current first aid/CPR certification
  • completion of approved Safety/Sanitation class in last five years
  • ability to lift 30 pounds without assistance
  • ability to stand for extended periods
  • ability to bend, stoop, and lift overhead
  • demonstrated ability to work cooperatively with diverse students, staff, and community
  • ability to interpret and promote nutrition education
  • professional attitude with willingness to work as a team
  • ability to make independent decisions within guidelines
  • must meet Manager I and II criteria
  • two years management experience in schools or equivalent
  • knowledge of USDA and Nutrition Services policies
  • ability to use computer systems for Nutrition Services

Job Duties
