This role, under the supervision of the Cafeteria Manager, involves preparing baked goods, salads, meat dishes, and other main courses to provide high-quality and nutritious meals for students. The position emphasizes teamwork and cooperation in meal preparation, service, and cleanup to maintain a self-supporting nutrition program that meets budgetary goals. Candidates will be responsible for maintaining food safety and sanitation standards, adhering to the Spokane Public Schools Nutrition Services program policies, and occasionally substituting for the manager when needed. The position requires early morning start times and full days, typically running from 5:30 AM to 2:00 PM, ensuring meal service aligns with the school day. This is a continuing position classified as Level 3 on the Nutrition Services Salary Schedule, with pay increments based on experience within Washington State public schools. Employees in this role will interact regularly with kitchen staff, school personnel, students, and the community, fostering positive relationships and a professional environment. Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED
  • One year of quantity cooking and/or baking preferred or equivalent institutional feeding experience
  • Valid Food Handler's Permit
  • Hepatitis A vaccination or waiver
  • Current fingerprint record
  • Ability to lift 30 pounds
  • Ability to stand for extended periods
  • Ability to operate kitchen equipment and Nutrition Services computer systems
  • Completion of safety/sanitation course within past five years
  • Commitment to professional growth
  • Ability to communicate and perform basic math
  • Flexibility and positive cooperative attitude
  • Ability to substitute for manager during absence

Job Qualifications

  • Demonstrated ability and aptitude to perform listed responsibilities
  • Meet all criteria for Prep Worker position
  • One year of quantity cooking and/or baking preferred or equivalent experience
  • Ability to meet Secondary Assistant Manager level requirements through interview or tests
  • Knowledge and ability to use kitchen utensils and equipment properly
  • Understanding of food safety and sanitation rules
  • Familiarity with quantity food preparation, storage, and portion control
  • Knowledge of USDA rules and Nutrition Services policies
  • Understanding of HACCP procedures
  • Ability to complete all required paperwork and reports
  • Possess valid Food Handler's Permit
  • Hepatitis A vaccination or waiver
  • Current fingerprint record on file
  • Level 2 School Nutrition Association certification preferred
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Commitment to professional growth and education
  • Completion of approved Safety and Sanitation course within 5 years
  • Ability to read, write, communicate, and perform basic math
  • Capability to lift 30 pounds, bend, stoop, lift overhead, and stand for long periods
  • Computer proficiency for district and Nutrition Services software

Job Duties

  • Responsible for knowing, following, and interpreting nutrition services program procedures, policies, and requirements
  • Actively participate in meal preparation, meal service, and cleanup following food safety and sanitation procedures
  • Provide supervision and training to prep workers, student workers, and substitutes
  • Transport food to other school locations as required
  • Accurately follow record keeping and inventory and food management guidelines
  • Complete required training classes and attend position-related meetings or workshops
  • Assist with kitchen opening and closing duties at the beginning and end of the school year
  • Fulfill other related duties as assigned or requested
