The Formula/Human Milk Tech Senior position is an integral role within the Nutrition Lab at Children's Hospital Colorado, designed to support clinical professionals such as Registered Nurses, Registered Dietitians, Nurse Practitioners, and Physicians. This part-time role operates at 0.75 FTE, involving 30 hours per week across three 10-hour shifts with weekday availability, rotating weekends, and holidays. The essential mission of this role is to ensure optimal nutritional care for hospitalized patients through the accurate, safe, and timely handling, storage, preparation, and distribution of formulas and/or human milk.

In this capacity, the Formula/Human Milk Tech Senior is responsible for verifying patient orders, maintaining meticulous records of human milk, and educating families on proper labeling, transport, and storage of milk. A vital part of the role includes providing milk expression education to mothers both in clinical settings and remotely via telephone. The role also manages human milk donations, supports breast pump rental programs, and ensures the Nutrition Lab is stocked with necessary supplies following best practices like the FIFO system.

This position demands a thorough understanding of infant, pediatric, and adult nutritional needs, enabling the technician to work closely with Registered Dietitians and medical care teams to clarify physician orders and ensure formula accuracy. Preparation of formula and human milk mixtures is done aseptically, adhering strictly to clinical guidelines and safety standards. Effective communication skills are critical for collaborating with care teams to address any concerns or issues promptly.

Beyond technical responsibilities, the Formula/Human Milk Tech Senior contributes to a clean, sanitary, and safe laboratory environment by adhering to rigorous cleaning protocols consistent with federal, state, and local health regulations. The position also involves community engagement by managing donated milk collection and facilitating distribution to the Mother's Milk Bank of Colorado.

This role offers a competitive hourly wage ranging from $17.57 to $26.35, dependent on experience, coupled with a comprehensive benefits package. Job Qualifications

Job Duties

  • Retrieves, reviews, and verifies patient human milk and/or formula orders via EMR
  • scans all human milk at various intervals to ensure accurate tracking and safe delivery
  • ensures appropriate education to parents for proper labeling, transport, and storage of human milk
  • provides milk expression education to mothers of inpatients, outpatients and by telephone
  • receives and maintains donated human milk from the community for delivery to the Mother's Milk Bank of Colorado through designation as a human milk bank outreach and donation center
  • tracks and maintains a breast pump rental/loan program for families and staff
  • maintains an adequate inventory of formula lab supplies and formulas by performing daily inventory and stocking
  • rotates formulas and supplies using FIFO (first in, first out)
  • assesses daily utilization of formulas and proactively alerts supervisor of concerns for surges in use of non-stock formulas, non-formulary formulas that could result in potential out of stock situations
  • coordinates with RDs and Clinical Nutrition leadership on non-formulary formula orders to ensure compliance to hospital formulary where possible, to secure prior approval for use of non-formulary formulas, to ensure accuracy of ingredient calculations, and that adequate stock of non-formulary formula is available for duration of patient’s admission
  • accurately calculates ingredient components, and accurately measures all ingredient components for all formula mixtures, including routine double check of work partner’s work
  • utilizes nutrition knowledge of infant, pediatric and adult patient populations and formulas to appropriately reach out to RDs and medical care team to clarify physician orders for formula that may not be ordered correctly or may not be appropriate for the patient
  • prepares human milk and/or formula according to provider orders using aseptic technique
  • provide basic education to patients and families on formula mixing instructions where appropriate and under RD supervision
  • delivers prepared human milk and/or formula to the designated locations in an accurate and timely manner
  • utilizes critical thinking, communication, customer service and emotional intelligence to effectively triage formula and human milk lab calls and in person interactions
  • communicates with supervisor, RDs, RNs, and care teams regarding concerns related to human milk and/or formula orders, mixing recipes, storage, and administration
  • maintains a clean, sanitary, safe, and orderly formula/human milk lab, ensuring department standards are met and that all cleaning, sanitizing, and disinfecting activities of storage areas, preparation areas and equipment are conducted and documented in accordance with relevant policies and procedures and in compliance with federal, state and local health regulations
  • receives expressed human milk from mothers who are dropping off
  • records and maintains an accurate inventory of human milk stored in the lab
  • communicates with care team through daily rounding to consider factors impacting feedings to be prepared
  • accurately calculates ingredient components, and accurately measures all ingredient components for all human milk mixtures
