Job Description

Portland Public Schools (PPS) is a prominent public school district located in the city of Portland, committed to providing high-quality education and supportive environments for students across diverse communities. With a strong focus on equity, inclusion, and lifelong wellness, PPS fosters an educational system where every staff member is considered an educator who plays a significant role in shaping student success. The district values diversity and actively works towards eliminating systemic barriers that impact student learning. The Nutrition Services department at PPS is dedicated to creating healthy school environments by promoting nutritious food choices and limiting access to less healthy options, aiming to support student well-being and academic achievement.

The role of Nutrition Assistant Rover within Portland Public Schools is a part-time position designed for individuals passionate about contributing to student health through food service. This position requires working on days when school is in session, typically Monday through Friday, with shifts ranging from two to five and a half hours daily during school hours between 7:30 AM and 2:30 PM. Nutrition Assistant Rovers are tasked with preparing nutritious, high-quality meals for students in grades Pre-K through 12, ensuring that meals meet the district’s standards for health and nutrition. The role includes customer service duties such as cashiering and cash handling, emphasizing the ability to work efficiently and safely in a fast-paced environment.

Flexibility is paramount for Nutrition Assistant Rovers, as they must be able to travel to multiple school locations throughout the district to cover varied assignments. This flexibility ensures that no two days are the same, contributing to a dynamic work experience. The position includes responsibilities like maintaining a sanitary work environment, multi-tasking during busy periods, and following verbal and written instructions accurately. Candidates will also need to maintain a current Multnomah County Food Handler’s Certification, which is required to begin work, though it is not mandatory at the time of hire.

This role pays $20.06 per hour and follows the PPS academic calendar, with work beginning in August and continuing through June, including summers off in alignment with school vacations. Employees working 20 or more hours per week are eligible for part-time medical and pharmacy benefits. Additional benefits include retirement plans, free meals during shifts, pre-tax transit passes, paid on-the-job training, accrued sick leave, and access to the Employee Assistance Program (EAP) which offers various personal support services.

PPS Nutrition Assistant Rovers enjoy a collaborative work culture where supporting teammates across kitchens is a key element. The role suits individuals who find fulfillment in working with children, preparing healthy meals, and contributing positively to the educational community’s wellness. This part-time employment opportunity provides meaningful work that supports the health and well-being of Portland's students while offering flexible hours and a supportive workplace environment.
