Job Description
A leading acute care hospital situated in central Connecticut is searching for a seasoned Nurse Educator Surgical Services to enhance their award-winning healthcare team. This mid-sized community hospital operates an approximately 150-bed acute care campus, delivering patient-centered care around the clock across numerous specialties, including emergency care, advanced surgery, heart and vascular services, orthopedics, women’s health and maternity, oncology, primary care, imaging and diagnostics, rehabilitation, wound care, and telehealth and outpatient services. It holds prestigious accreditations and has garnered multiple regional and national awards that reflect its dedication to quality, patient safety, compassionate service, modern technology, and coordinated care aimed at keeping families healthy close to home.
The Nurse Educator Surgical Services plays a vital role in elevating perioperative quality, patient safety, and staff competence within the operating room, post-anesthesia care unit, pre-op areas, and sterile processing departments. The role involves designing, delivering, and assessing evidence-based clinical education through various methods such as needs assessments, onboarding pathways for new hires and travelers, in-service training, skills labs, and simulation activities. The position also includes competency validation and documentation in learning management systems, coaching preceptors, supporting professional development and continuing education, and conducting OR rounds to offer real-time coaching on aseptic techniques, surgical safety checklists, equipment usage, and workflow optimization.
Integration with surgeons, anesthesiologists, and nurse leaders is essential for driving policy updates, implementing new technology rollouts, and optimizing clinical pathways. The Nurse Educator also spearheads quality improvement initiatives aligned with AORN standards, infection prevention, and regulatory readiness. Tracking outcome and education metrics, preparing staff for certifications such as CNOR, and maintaining up-to-date learning resources, curricula, and teaching schedules further amplify the role’s impact. This blend of clinical presence and curriculum design ensures adherence to best practices, streamlines processes, and supports outstanding patient outcomes within complex and dynamic Surgical Services environments.
The Surgical Service line itself offers comprehensive, patient-focused care facilitated by expert surgeons, advanced anesthesia support, and state-of-the-art operating rooms emphasizing safety, efficiency, and patient comfort. The department provides a wide range of procedures, including minimally invasive and laparoscopic surgeries covering general surgery, orthopedics (including joint and sports-related procedures), colorectal, urologic, gynecologic, ENT, breast, and outpatient endoscopy services with both same-day and inpatient options. The patient journey is supported by a coordinated continuum of care, from pre-admission testing and education to personalized pain management, Enhanced Recovery pathways, and seamless post-operative follow-up and rehabilitation.
The surgical programs emphasize robust infection prevention practices, cutting-edge technology, and a highly skilled perioperative team. The goal is to reduce complications, speed recovery, and achieve excellent surgical outcomes that bring high-quality care conveniently close to home. This organization champions a culture of excellence, teamwork, and continuous education, making it an attractive workplace for professionals committed to advancing surgical nursing practice and patient safety.
Beyond professional appeal, living in central Connecticut offers a blend of small-city charm and modern convenience. The community is known for affordable housing, family-friendly neighborhoods, extensive parks, trails, and recreational opportunities. It boasts reputable schools, quality healthcare services, diverse shopping and dining options, and a vibrant cultural scene with various seasonal festivals. Proximity to major highways and several key regional employers in manufacturing, healthcare, and technology fosters a balanced lifestyle with easy access to nearby urban centers, lakes, and outdoor adventures.
