The role of R&D Technician I at AstenJohnson is a dynamic, full-time, salaried position based in Williston, VT, with a schedule from Monday to Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. This position offers an attractive salary range of $62,400 to $70,720 annually, or $30.00 to $34.00 per hour, depending on education, experience, and qualifications. The position is salaried non-exempt and eligible for overtime under applicable law. The primary responsibility of the R&D Technician I is to provide hands-on technical support for production, quality assurance, product development, material qualification, and site ISO-related activities. This includes performing both routine and non-routine testing to support day-to-day operations and longer-term innovation projects.
The successful candidate will work closely with the R&D/Process Engineer and cross-functional teams, contributing insights to improve products by testing materials, participating in trial production runs with various polymers and blends, and documenting analytical results through detailed reporting with basic statistics, graphs, and photographs. Beyond technical testing, the role encompasses support for ISO 9001 quality management system activities, such as organizing documentation, preparing for audits, and maintaining compliance records. Prior experience with ISO systems is advantageous but not mandatory, as the company is willing to provide training and development to help the candidate fulfill these responsibilities.
The position requires strong technical and analytical skills, proficiency in managing laboratory equipment, and the ability to analyze data to recommend solutions. Additionally, the candidate must be motivated, detail-oriented, effective at prioritizing tasks, and possess excellent communication skills—both written and verbal. The role also demands some flexibility for occasional off-hours work to support trial runs and production needs, ensuring the company's responsiveness to project timelines and technical challenges.

Job Requirements
- Minimum high school diploma or equivalent
- 2-5 years relevant industry experience preferred
- ability to perform technical and analytical testing
- knowledge of polymer processing and extrusion

Job Qualifications
- Minimum high school diploma with 5 years of experience or associate degree with 2-4 years of experience
- knowledge of processing thermoplastic polymer materials and filament or continuous manufacturing processes such as extrusion
- basic knowledge and experience in analytical testing of filaments, fibers, and polymers
- lean and six sigma certification or experience desirable
- familiarity with quality management systems and willingness to learn ISO requirements

Job Duties
- Support filaments production and quality assurance by performing routine and non-routine testing
- Assist in troubleshooting and data analysis
- Prepare and test materials according to existing methods including chemical, physical, and optical testing
- Collate test samples, data, and record results with documentation including tables, graphs, and reports
- Maintain calibration, operation, and routine maintenance of laboratory equipment
- Assist in qualification of new raw materials and incoming audit testing for quality control
- Assist in running the Pilot Line and producing product samples
- Develop new tests and test procedures as needed
- Support site ISO responsibilities including documentation, audit preparation, recordkeeping, and compliance activities
- Provide occasional off-hours support for trials, projects, testing, or production
- Follow health and safety policies and promote continuous safety improvements
- Foster a workplace environment advocating ethics, respect, and diversity
