Job Description
The Attorney General's Office, New Jersey Racing Commission (NJRC), is a critical part of New Jersey's legal and law enforcement framework. The Attorney General oversees a large and diverse department that includes over 2,800 sworn law enforcement officers, 600 attorneys, and thousands of other public servants. The NJRC specifically regulates horse racing within the state, ensuring that all activities comply with state laws and regulations to maintain fairness, integrity, and public trust. This commission is a bipartisan body appointed by the Governor, staffed by dedicated career employees committed to overseeing the permitting and licensing processes for horse owners, trainers, drivers, and veterinarians. The NJRC plays an important regulatory role in the state's horse racing industry, which includes monitoring financial transactions related to pari-mutuel wagering and maintaining rigorous compliance standards across all operational areas.
The position of Hourly State Investigator 2 within the New Jersey Racing Commission is a specialized role that supports the agency's mission to regulate horse racing activities effectively. This role is part-time and temporary, with an hourly pay scale ranging from $39.90 to $58.46, reflecting the nature of the duties and expertise required. The role involves overseeing and ensuring the security, accuracy, and legality of pari-mutuel wagers processed at the totalisator hub facility. The investigator will monitor and observe all facets of wagering activities, verifying that procedures follow the commission's established rules and regulations.
Candidates for this role will work under limited supervision from senior officials such as the Executive Director or a State Investigator 4. While much of the work occurs during regular business hours, the position may require flexibility to work non-traditional hours, including evenings and weekends, especially during short-notice assignments or critical events. The hourly nature of the role limits employment to 944 hours per fiscal year, making it suitable for individuals seeking part-time, flexible work within the public safety and regulatory environment.
Successful candidates will bring a blend of investigative skills, analytical experience, and familiarity with financial record examination, preferably within law enforcement or regulatory settings. Although a bachelor's degree from an accredited college is required, substitute experience in the field may be considered on a year-for-year basis. The ideal applicant may also have a master's degree or hold CPA certification, which can offset some experience requirements. Candidates with knowledge of pari-mutuel wagering, transaction analysis, database management, and proficiency in spreadsheet software will be especially competitive.
This position offers an opportunity to engage with a specialized regulatory body that plays a fundamental role in maintaining the integrity of New Jersey's horse racing industry. It represents a meaningful way to contribute to public safety, law enforcement, and regulatory compliance, making it an excellent match for investigators looking to apply their skills in a unique and dynamic environment.
