Job Description

NAVSTA Norfolk is a major United States Navy installation located in Norfolk, Virginia. It serves as a strategic and operational hub for the Navy, supporting a wide range of military and administrative activities. As part of the Navy Exchange (NEX) system, this location provides retail and food services to Navy personnel, their families, and authorized patrons, maintaining high standards of customer service and quality. The Navy Exchange operates various food service facilities including mobile food trucks that serve convenient and diverse meal options to customers on base and at prescribed locations around the installation.

This open position is for a Food Service Associate who will be responsible for preparing and selling a variety of prepared-to-order food items on a mobile food truck at multiple Navy Exchange locations within the Norfolk installation. This role is part-time, offering between 20 and 34.5 hours per week, with a pay rate starting at $20.82 per hour. The Food Service Associate plays a critical role in ensuring customers receive fresh, appetizing meals promptly while adhering to all safety, hygiene, and operational procedures.

The Food Service Associate will be involved in cooking and serving a limited variety of hot and cold food items such as frankfurters, cheeseburgers, quesadillas, chicken and pork BBQ sandwiches, and french fries. Using equipment like grills, microwave ovens, and deep fryers, the associate will prepare high-quality food that meets established portion sizes and pricing standards. Customer service is a top priority, and the associate will take orders, handle cash transactions at the register, and ensure customers are aware of menu options and specials.

In addition to preparing food, the associate will be responsible for loading and driving the mobile food truck on prescribed routes both on and off the installation at scheduled times. This requires a valid driver’s license or Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and the ability to operate the vehicle safely. The role also involves inventory management, including requisitioning supplies and maintaining stock, as well as keeping the food service area clean, organized, and compliant with Navy Exchange customer service standards.

Working conditions may include exposure to uncomfortably warm or cold environments, handling hot equipment, and performing physical tasks such as lifting utensils or containers weighing up to 45 pounds. This role requires standing and walking for long periods and adherence to traffic safety and food hygiene regulations. The Food Service Associate must maintain a neat appearance, wear an appropriate uniform and name tag, and deliver service with tact, good manners, and courtesy to every customer.

The successful candidate will have at least 18 months of experience in food preparation and service, combined with relevant food safety certification and vehicle operation skills. High school education or equivalent is required, with substitutions allowed for experience. This position works under general supervision but requires independent task management and problem-solving abilities. All duties must be carried out efficiently to ensure food quality, customer satisfaction, and accurate cash handling.
