Job Description

The University of Vermont Medical Center (UVMMC) located at 111 Colchester Avenue, Burlington, Vermont, represents a cornerstone of healthcare excellence and innovation in the region. As a comprehensive medical facility, UVMMC is dedicated to providing high-quality patient care, advanced medical training, and engaging in robust clinical research. With a commitment to community health and educational advancement, UVMMC operates as a teaching hospital that equips future healthcare professionals with the skills and knowledge necessary to thrive in a dynamic healthcare environment. It stands as a proud pillar within the Vermont and greater Northeastern New York health system, linking multiple affiliate hospitals and care centers to deliver a wide range of medical services. UVMMC holds a strong reputation for fostering inclusive and supportive work environments where staff development and patient safety are prioritized.

This job opportunity is specifically geared towards May 2026 nursing graduates interested in embarking on their nursing careers through the Nurse Residency Programs offered across the network's health partners. These residency programs are meticulously designed to support newly graduated registered nurses transitioning from academic environments to professional nursing roles. The comprehensive programs blend classroom learning with hands-on clinical experiences, ensuring that new nurses acquire the critical skills, evidence-based knowledge, and professional behaviors essential to delivering safe and compassionate patient care.

The Nurse Residency Programs at UVMMC and its affiliates embody a commitment to lifelong learning, continuous improvement, and supportive mentorship. New nurses will engage regularly with expert nurse educators, clinical preceptors, and experienced nursing staff who provide direct guidance and supervision in clinical settings. These structured experiences help residents refine clinical competencies, enhance decision-making skills, and adapt to the fast-paced healthcare environment with confidence and professionalism. The residency coursework covers various specialized areas including intensive care, emergency medicine, pediatrics, surgery, psychiatric care, home health, hospice, and more, depending on the chosen unit and affiliate location.

UVMMC and its health partners are recruiting for the Summer and Fall 2026 residency cohorts, with positions available in a variety of clinical units. Facilities involved include Alice Hyde Medical Center in Malone, NY; Central Vermont Medical Center in Berlin, VT; Champlain Valley Physicians Hospital in Plattsburgh, NY; Elizabethtown Community Hospital in Elizabethtown, NY; Home Health & Hospice services within Chittenden and Grand Isle counties, VT; Porter Medical Center in Middlebury, VT; and The University of Vermont Medical Center itself in Burlington, VT. Each location offers unique specialized units such as emergency departments, intensive care units, birthing centers, surgical services, psychiatric inpatient care, and more, expanding the scope of clinical exposure for new nurses.

This is a regular, full-time employment opportunity within the nursing department under the talent acquisition leadership of Stephanie St Hilaire. Candidates will benefit from a structured onboarding experience designed to smooth their transition into professional practice, access to ongoing education, and potential sign-on bonuses dependent on unit and affiliation policies. Internal employees considering transfer opportunities should be aware of specific eligibility criteria related to sign-on bonuses.

Engaging in a Nurse Residency Program at UVMMC offers a transformative start to a nurse’s career, combining supportive mentorship, practical experience, and educational advancement. Graduates are well-prepared to deliver high-caliber nursing care that positively impacts patient outcomes and community health. UVMMC’s commitment to nurturing early-career nurses aligns with broader organizational goals of excellence, innovation, and community service, making it an ideal environment for new nurses seeking to launch rewarding, growth-oriented nursing careers.
