New Castle County Elementary Reading Tutor Full-Time

Reading Assist is a dedicated educational organization committed to transforming the lives of elementary school students who face significant reading challenges. Operating as an AmeriCorps partner, Reading Assist provides structured, evidence-based reading intervention programs in high-needs elementary schools. This unique program targets children from kindergarten through fifth grade, offering them specialized instructional support tailored to help them master foundational reading skills. The organization is committed to fostering literacy and academic success by combining rigorous training, consistent support, and community engagement to make early reading viable and enjoyable for all students. Joining Reading Assist as a Reading Assist Fellow means dedicating a school year of meaningful service, from August 24, 2026, through June 30, 2027. Fellows work full-time in partner elementary schools Monday through Friday, typically between 8:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., providing up to 45 minutes of individualized reading instruction daily to small groups or one-on-one sessions consisting of 9-18 students. This hands-on role requires commitment, patience, and adaptability, with fellows becoming integral members of their school communities. Prior to engaging with students, fellows participate in an intensive four-week, graduate-level training program designed to equip them with skills in reading intervention, behavioral management, and instructional strategies. Throughout the service year, fellows receive continuous support and feedback from Program Managers who conduct biweekly visits and regular meetings to guide instructional approaches and monitor student progress.

The fellowship experience not only provides direct educational impact but also cultivates professional development through participation in AmeriCorps training, events, and community service projects, promoting a strong sense of civic responsibility. Fellows are expected to tailor lesson plans to meet the individualized needs of each student and maintain precise records of student attendance, progress, and AmeriCorps service hours. Communication and professionalism are key aspects of the fellowship as fellows interact with school liaisons, Reading Assist staff, and Program Managers to ensure seamless program implementation. The role is well suited for individuals with a college degree who have a genuine interest in literacy, education, and community service, and who are open to professional growth and constructive feedback. While prior teaching experience is not mandatory, a proactive, resilient, and patient mindset is essential for success. Equipped with necessary technology like a computer and proficiency or willingness to learn tools such as Google Drive, Zoom, and PowerPoint, fellows contribute to making reading accessible and enjoyable for children who might otherwise struggle.
