Job Description

Yale New Haven Health System is a premier academic health system dedicated to providing exceptional care, advancing medical research, and educating future health professionals. Rooted in the values of integrity, patient-centered care, respect, accountability, and compassion, this organization is committed to improving the health and well-being of the communities it serves. As a nationally recognized leader in clinical care and innovation, Yale New Haven Health System fosters a collaborative and supportive environment that nurtures professional growth and excellence. The system offers comprehensive and specialized medical services through its network, including Yale New Haven Hospital, which serves as a hub for advanced procedures and critical care.

Yale New Haven Health is expanding its neurosurgery services to include 24/7 Advanced Practice Provider (APP) coverage. This expansion reflects the system's commitment to enhancing patient access and delivering continual specialized care for patients with complex neurosurgical needs. The APP team plays a pivotal role in supporting neurosurgeons by providing expert post-operative care, managing critical neurosurgical consults, and collaborating closely with multidisciplinary teams across the health system.

The available position for Physician Assistant (PA) in the neurosurgery department is a full-time role that offers a rotating schedule designed to support continuous patient care. Employees may work four 10-hour shifts or three 13-hour shifts, including daytime, nighttime, and weekend coverage. The role is an integral part of the neurosurgery team, providing direct patient management for those with brain, spine, and stroke-related conditions. This includes performing routine rounds, assisting in operative cases, managing external ventricular drains (EVDs), and acting as a liaison among various services such as medicine, surgery, trauma, and surgical intensive care units (SICU).

Physician Assistants at Yale New Haven Health are empowered to practice collaboratively with supervising neurosurgeons in accordance with institutional policies and state laws. The role requires the PA to perform physical examinations, order and interpret diagnostic tests, formulate treatment plans, and provide patient education. A unique aspect of this role is the opportunity to engage in significant operative responsibilities, including first assisting in surgeries and managing high-acuity patient care in both inpatient and emergency settings.

The position emphasizes professional development, continuous learning, and quality management, ensuring that PAs maintain the highest level of clinical competency and adhere to ethical standards. The PA also contributes to research initiatives, quality improvement projects, and the education of new house staff and NP/PA students. With a supportive infrastructure and access to robust resources, PAs at Yale New Haven Health can thrive in a stimulating environment that values leadership, collaboration, and compassionate care.

This opportunity is ideal for individuals with prior neurosurgery or critical care experience who are seeking to advance their careers in a dynamic and rewarding academic medical center setting. Yale New Haven Health values diversity and inclusion, offering equal employment opportunities to all qualified candidates. Those selected for this role will benefit from competitive compensation, comprehensive benefits, and the chance to make a meaningful impact on patient outcomes in one of the nation’s leading healthcare organizations.
