UNC Health is currently seeking a Neurodiagnostic Technologist to join its growing neuroscience team at UNC Rex Healthcare, a large community hospital located in Raleigh, North Carolina. This full-time, onsite position offers a competitive hourly salary range of $26.85 to $38.61, depending on experience and internal equity, with standard work hours of 36 hours per week during the day shift. The Neurodiagnostic Technologist will play a crucial role in diagnosing and monitoring patients with complex neurological disorders by performing both standard and advanced electroencephalogram (EEG) studies. Working in an environment that includes inpatient units, intensive care units, emergency services, and procedural areas, this role demands proficiency in managing a diverse patient population with varying neurological conditions.
The ideal candidate will work closely alongside neurologists, epileptologists, intensivists, nurses, and other multidisciplinary team members to ensure high-quality diagnostic testing that directly supports clinical decision-making and improves patient outcomes. The technologist will be responsible for conducting routine and specialized EEG recordings, including portable, stat, and continuous EEG (cEEG) studies. They must be capable of recognizing normal and abnormal waveforms, artifacts, and clinically significant events, and promptly communicating findings to the interpreting neurologist.
In addition to performing EEG tests, this role requires setting up, calibrating, troubleshooting, and maintaining EEG equipment, while ensuring optimal electrode placement and recording quality. The Neurodiagnostic Technologist will prepare patients by obtaining relevant medical histories, explaining procedures, and providing empathetic education to patients and families. Accurate documentation of EEG recordings and patient observations is essential to support timely physician interpretation and diagnosis.
This position also requires strict adherence to departmental policies, accreditation standards, infection prevention protocols, and patient safety measures. Job Requirements
- Graduation from an acceptable program of neurophysiology
- Registry eligible for EEG, EP, CNIM, NCV, polysomnography, or registered sleep technologist
- If completion of an acceptable program, no prior experience required
- If holding a high school diploma or GED, two years of relevant experience
- Ability to recognize normal and abnormal EEG waveforms and clinical events
- Competency in setting up and troubleshooting EEG equipment
- Strong communication skills
- Willingness to comply with departmental policies and safety protocols
Job Qualifications
- Graduation from an acceptable program of Neurophysiology
- Registry eligible in one of the following specialty areas: EEG (R. EEG T., CLTM), EP (R. EP T.), Intra-Operative Monitoring (CNIM), Nerve Conduction Velocity studies (NCV), Polysomnography (RPSGT), Registered Sleep Technologist (RST)
- Ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary healthcare teams
- Strong attention to detail in EEG recording and documentation
- Excellent communication skills to interact with patients and healthcare professionals
- Commitment to patient safety and adherence to infection prevention protocols
- Participation in ongoing professional development and quality improvement efforts
Job Duties
- Perform routine, portable, stat, and continuous EEG studies for hospitalized patients in accordance with departmental and professional standards
- Acquire high-quality EEG recordings while recognizing normal and abnormal waveforms, artifacts, and significant clinical events requiring timely communication with the interpreting neurologist
- Prepare patients for testing by obtaining relevant medical histories, explaining procedures, and providing compassionate patient and family education
- Perform EEG testing in various inpatient settings including medical-surgical units, intensive care units, emergency services, and procedural areas
- Set up, calibrate, troubleshoot, and maintain EEG equipment ensuring accurate electrode application and optimal recording quality
- Review and document EEG recordings, patient observations, and clinical events to support physician interpretation and timely diagnosis
- Collaborate closely with neurologists, nursing staff, physicians, and interdisciplinary teams to provide exceptional patient care and support rapid clinical decision-making
- Maintain compliance with departmental policies, accreditation standards, infection prevention practices, and patient safety protocols
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives, continuing education, and professional development to remain current with evolving neurodiagnostic practices
