Job Description

Battelle is an innovative global research and development organization dedicated to solving some of the world’s most pressing scientific and technological challenges. With a rich legacy of managing national laboratories, designing pioneering products, and delivering critical services, Battelle partners with multi-national corporations, small start-ups, and government agencies to drive impactful solutions. The company’s collaborative and inclusive culture values diverse backgrounds and experiences, fostering an environment where all qualified individuals can thrive and contribute meaningfully to scientific advancement and societal improvement.

Battelle currently manages the National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) program, a visionary 30-plus-year project funded solely by the National Science Foundation. NEON is dedicated to assessing and predicting changes in ecology on a continental scale by collecting comprehensive ecological data across 20 eco-climatic domains representing some of the most critical U.S. ecosystems. This cutting-edge endeavor employs advanced airborne observation platforms, automated sensors, trained field teams, and a sophisticated cyberinfrastructure to analyze and disseminate ecological information. With over 500 personnel involved, NEON represents the first large-scale ecological observatory designed to forecast ecological changes in response to climate shifts, land use, and invasive species.

The NEON Engagement Coordinator role based in Boulder, CO (hybrid work model) is a fundamental position supporting this groundbreaking ecological research. As a core member of the NEON Engagement team, the coordinator is responsible for developing, implementing, and managing strategic education, engagement, and outreach initiatives across the nation. This includes overseeing NEON’s Domain Outreach Liaison Program, a network of 18 field ecologists committed to fostering communication and collaboration with external stakeholders at numerous sites.

The Engagement Coordinator liaises closely with leadership and program staff, tracking progress and measuring the impact of outreach efforts as aligned with NEON’s Strategic Interaction Plan. Equipped with expertise in using Salesforce as a CRM platform, the coordinator documents extensive engagement activities, ensuring detailed records and utilizing data to guide ongoing improvements. Additionally, this role contributes to broader communications by partnering with the NEON Communications Specialist and Graphic Designer to craft effective outreach materials and training resources.

Further responsibilities include organizing NEON’s presence at national and scientific conferences, facilitating workshops and training sessions to enhance data skills for various audiences, and supporting both internal and external communication strategies to elevate NEON’s visibility. The ideal candidate possesses excellent organizational skills, a knack for nurturing relationships across distributed teams, and a passion for environmental science and community engagement.

The salary for this position ranges from $58,000 to $68,000 per year, reflecting Battelle’s commitment to fair and equitable compensation practices. Candidates’ salaries will be determined by factors including education, experience, skills, and certifications, as well as geographic and market considerations. This comprehensive and rewarding position offers a competitive benefits package designed to support the well-being and career development of employees while contributing to vital scientific efforts that advance ecological understanding at a national scale.
