MWR Recreation Assistant

This position is with the Navy Region Mid-Atlantic Command, a federal agency responsible for providing Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (MWR) programs and services to military personnel, their families, and authorized patrons. The Navy's MWR programs are designed to enhance the quality of life and promote the well-being of active duty members, reservists, retirees, and their dependents through a wide variety of recreational activities. The agency operates numerous recreational facilities, including community activities, sports, arts and crafts, campsites, and youth programs, among others, all aimed at meeting diverse interests and needs within the military community.

The incumbent in this role will be assigned to one or more specialized recreational activities such as community activities, Information, Tickets, and Travel (ITT) office operations, campsites/cottages management, arts and crafts facilitation, fitness and athletics, golf course operations, skeet range management, youth programming, bowling centers, or stables. This is a dynamic position that combines direct participant interaction, administrative duties, event coordination, and equipment management. The role often requires operating sales of retail items related to these activities and ensuring that all safety rules and regulations are strictly followed.

As a community recreation specialist, you will be responsible for performing and assisting in the operation of the designated recreation activity or program. You will apply your understanding of the interests and needs of program participants to effectively carry out your assignments, which may include scheduling events, supervising youth activities, setting up facilities for sports events, coordinating tours and field trips, and instructing participants in the use of related equipment. Your role will also involve administrative functions like managing sales transactions through Point of Sale (POS) systems, maintaining inventories of equipment and retail items, conducting inspections, and preparing daily activity reports.

This position requires a proactive approach in planning, publicizing, marketing, and executing MWR programs and special events. A strong customer service orientation is essential, as you will provide information, support, and service to patrons, verifying eligibility and promoting recreational opportunities tailored to individual or group needs. You will assist in recruitment, training, and scheduling of community recreation staff, ensuring that administrative tasks and event after-action reports are timely and accurate.

The role demands flexibility as irregular working hours may be necessary, including early or late shifts, weekends, and holidays. You are expected to maintain certifications such as Emergency First Responder (EFR) or CPR First Aid, Food Handler, and Controlling Alcohol Risks Effectively (CARE) training, either prior to or within 90 days of employment. Additionally, a valid state drivers' license is required for transporting patrons off-base.
