This specific job opportunity is for a dietary assistant position at the Maryland School for the Deaf, which is an 11-month, school-year role. The position does not require work during winter break, spring break, or the summer months when the school is closed. The dietary assistant plays a vital role in the dietary department, responsible for the preparation and setup of all meals served at the school. This includes managing the cafeteria line, preparing the salad bar, cleaning and maintaining sanitation standards, and documenting product usage according to prescribed health and sanitation regulations. The position demands attention to detail and adherence to safety and cleanliness protocols to ensure the health and well-being of the students and staff.

Working as a dietary assistant at MSD requires a combination of physical stamina and teamwork. The employee will perform essential tasks such as operating dish machines or hand-washing dishes in a three-compartment sink, cleaning kitchen and work areas, replenishing supplies such as soap and paper towels, and handling trash disposal with care. The dietary assistant supports meal services across breakfast, lunch, and dinner, including preparing desserts and setting up the salad bar for lunch and dinner. Additionally, special food requests for outings, banquets, holidays, and graduation events are prepared. The role also includes preparing meals for specific needs such as in-cafeteria suspensions, in-school suspensions, work-study meals, and health center meals.

This position is suitable for individuals who are capable of lifting up to 50 lbs and standing for extended periods. While there is no requirement for prior experience or education, a willingness to learn American Sign Language is highly desired to facilitate better communication within the school community. The job also requires employees to potentially operate vehicles for school assignments, necessitating possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license in the state of Maryland. New hires must undergo a criminal background check at their own expense and provide three letters of recommendation.
