Job Description

The Maryland School for the Deaf (MSD) is a dedicated educational institution committed to providing a rich, inclusive environment for deaf and hard of hearing students ranging from birth through age 21. Located on the Columbia Campus in Ellicott City, Maryland, MSD offers a bilingual education approach that emphasizes full access to American Sign Language (ASL) and English. This educational philosophy is embedded in comprehensive academic programs, extracurricular activities, and student life to foster the overall development and well-being of its students. MSD operates in close partnership with families and communities to empower students, encouraging them to think critically and cultivate a strong sense of identity and belonging. The school takes pride in being a supportive community where every student is valued and given the tools to succeed both academically and socially.

This particular job opening is for a Cook II position on the Columbia Campus. This role is an 11-month, school-year position, working only during the academic calendar and not during school breaks such as winter, spring, or summer vacations. The Cook II is a vital part of the Dietary Department responsible for intermediate-level food preparation and service tasks. The incumbent ensures that meals are prepared and served in compliance with the facility's Food Safety Program and Wellness Policy, adhering to all Maryland School for the Deaf, Columbia Campus policies, and applicable health and sanitation regulations. The Cook II supports an efficient food service operation by preparing both simple and complex food items like vegetables, salads, meats, and beverages through methods such as baking, frying, broiling, steaming, and mixing.

The Cook II assembles tray lines and serves meals according to scheduled daily menus, making sure the correct portion sizes and techniques are used. Responsibilities include cleaning and sanitizing work areas and equipment to uphold stringent sanitary standards, operating kitchen appliances safely and effectively, and maintaining cleanliness and safety throughout the food handling process. The role also involves protecting food and kitchen supplies from contamination, spoilage, or pilferage, as well as keeping accurate records of supplies used and the number of persons served. Additionally, the Cook II may provide training and supervision to other dietary staff members, such as Dietary Workers or Food Service Assistants, particularly in cooking techniques.

Candidates for this position are expected to bring a minimum of three years of food preparation experience in public or governmental settings such as hospitals, restaurants, or similar institutions. A vocational or technical high school diploma with a focus on food service may substitute for up to two years of experience. U.S. Armed Forces culinary or food service experience at a non-commissioned officer rank is also considered an equivalent substitute for experience on a year-for-year basis. Furthermore, candidates must be willing to become Serve Safe Certified and ideally should possess or be willing to obtain this certification. Physical requirements include the ability to lift up to 50 pounds and stand for extended periods during shifts. The school values diversity and encourages individuals from underserved and underrepresented groups, bilingual applicants, and veterans to apply. Applicants will undergo a criminal background check and should provide three letters of recommendation as part of the application process.
