Job Description
The organization is a dedicated mental health and substance abuse support provider located in North Carolina, specializing in delivering critical peer support services to individuals coping with mental illness and/or substance use disorders. As a vital part of the community health network, this establishment operates under the North Carolina Certified Peer Support Specialist Program, ensuring that peer support specialists are adequately trained and certified to offer quality assistance based on their lived experiences. This program recognizes the unique value of individuals who have experienced recovery firsthand, enabling them to offer empathy-driven support that complements traditional mental health services. Peer Support Specialists play an essential role in recovery by connecting with others on a deeply personal level, fostering hope, resilience, and empowerment through shared understanding.
The role of the Peer Support Specialist within this organization is extensively focused on providing immediate crisis intervention and ongoing support to recipients around the clock, operating 24/7/365 to ensure accessibility whenever help is needed. Responsibilities include telephonic crisis response, face-to-face assessments, development of personalized crisis plans prior to discharge, detailed documentation, and continuous monitoring of psychiatric or addiction symptoms. These specialists act as a bridge, coordinating movement across different levels of care and assisting with discharge planning aimed at smooth community reintegration following hospitalization or residential stays.
Further, the position carries supervisory duties over Peer Support Paraprofessionals and emphasizes strict adherence to confidentiality under HIPAA guidelines, consumer rights, and agency policies. Peer Support Specialists are expected to maintain professional teamwork, participate in mandatory meetings, and stay current with all required training to ensure compliance and efficacy in service delivery. This role demands compassion, reliability, and an intrinsic motivation to support others through recovery journeys with respect and dignity.
Ideal candidates are individuals who bring lived experience of recovery, a spirit of service, and the ability to navigate complex crisis situations calmly and effectively. This position not only requires technical competence but also dedication to nurturing trust and hope within the community. Employment type is full-time, with a strong emphasis on continuous availability and responsiveness that aligns with emergency mental health services. This specialized role is critical in fostering recovery-oriented systems that prioritize peer-led support as a cornerstone for mental health and substance use disorder services.
