This full-time position is specifically for an Aerospace Medicine Specialist or Flight Surgeon who serves as a primary care physician dedicated to the health and operational readiness of pilots and crew members involved in air and space missions. Job Requirements
- Must have a medical degree from an accredited institution
- Completion of specialized training in aerospace or related medicine
- Must hold a valid and unrestricted medical license
- Must be a U.S. citizen
- Must be between 18 and 47 years of age
- Must complete Commissioned Officer training
- Willingness to relocate as necessary
- Minimum 12 months of experience as a flight surgeon (for Aerospace Medicine Specialist role)
- Board eligibility in Aerospace Medicine is essential (for Aerospace Medicine Specialist role)
Job Qualifications
- M.D. or D.O. degree and completed an ACGME- or AOA-accredited program of postgraduate specialty training
- If a graduate of a foreign medical school, you must have attained permanent certification by the Educational Council for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) and complete an approved internship, residency and/or fellowship
- Completion of a residency at a fully accredited residency program
- Approved residencies are Family Medicine, Emergency Medicine and Internal Medicine
- Internal Medicine candidates with subspecialty training will require CFM approval
- Must be proficient in adult primary care medicine
- Completion of a primary course in aerospace medicine
- Must hold a current, active, permanent and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a state or territory of the United States or in the District of Columbia
- Must possess an aeronautical rating of Flight Surgeon, Senior Flight Surgeon or Chief Flight Surgeon
- Minimum 12 months of experience as a flight surgeon (Aerospace Medicine Specialist only)
- Board eligible in Aerospace Medicine (Aerospace Medicine Specialist only)
- Completion of Commissioned Officer training course
- Must be a U.S. citizen between the ages of 18 and 47
- Must be willing to relocate
Job Duties
- Conduct medical examinations and provide care for air and missile crews
- Determine fitness for flying and special duties as well as evaluating living and working environments to detect and control health hazards
- Regularly participate in flying missions to observe and advise on aeromedical issues
- Develop and manage preventive medicine programs, including the education of flight personnel in healthy lifestyles
- Establish procedures for managing casualties in aviation accidents and other disasters
- Provide advice on aeromedical evacuation and serve on aviation mishap investigation boards
- Serve as the liaison between flying squadrons and medical services
