The Aerospace Medicine Specialist/Flight Surgeon role is a critical position within the Air Force medical community, providing specialized medical care and expertise to air and missile crew members operating in extreme and challenging environments. As an Aerospace Medicine Specialist, you will be primarily responsible for addressing the unique physiological and psychological stresses encountered by pilots and crew during flight and space missions. This role requires a high level of clinical expertise, particularly in adult primary care and aerospace medicine, to ensure the health, safety, and operational readiness of Airmen. The specialist conducts thorough medical examinations, evaluates fitness for flying and other special duties, and develops preventive medicine programs to mitigate health risks. This includes educating flight personnel on healthy lifestyle choices and advising on aeromedical evacuation and mishap investigations. The Aerospace Medicine Specialist also serves as the vital link between flying squadrons and medical services, contributing to the overall mission success by maintaining the peak condition of aircrew personnel.

Job Requirements
- Must have completed medical degree either M.D. or D.O.
- Must have valid unrestricted medical license to practice in the U.S.
- Must complete an accredited residency program
- Must possess or be eligible for aeronautical ratings such as Flight Surgeon
- Must have at least 12 months experience as a flight surgeon for aerospace medicine specialist roles
- Must be U.S. citizen aged between 18 to 47 years
- Must complete Commissioned Officer training course
- Must be willing to relocate
Job Qualifications
- M.D. or D.O. degree and completed an ACGME- or AOA-accredited program of postgraduate specialty training
- If a graduate of a foreign medical school, attained permanent certification by the Educational Council for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) and completed an approved internship, residency and/or fellowship
- Completion of a residency at a fully accredited residency program such as Family Medicine, Emergency Medicine, or Internal Medicine
- Internal Medicine candidates with subspecialty training require CFM approval
- Proficient in adult primary care medicine
- Completion of a primary course in aerospace medicine
- Hold a current, active, permanent and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a state or territory of the United States or in the District of Columbia
- Possess an aeronautical rating of Flight Surgeon, Senior Flight Surgeon or Chief Flight Surgeon
- Minimum 12 months of experience as a flight surgeon (Aerospace Medicine Specialist only)
- Board eligible in Aerospace Medicine (Aerospace Medicine Specialist only)
- Completion of Commissioned Officer training course
- Must be a U.S. citizen between the ages of 18 and 47
- Must be willing to relocate
Job Duties
- Conduct medical examinations and provide care for air and missile crews
- Determine fitness for flying and special duties as well as evaluating living and working environments to detect and control health hazards
- Regularly participate in flying missions to observe and advise on aeromedical issues
- Develop and manage preventive medicine programs, including the education of flight personnel in healthy lifestyles
- Establish procedures for managing casualties in aviation accidents and other disasters
- Provide advice on aeromedical evacuation and serve on aviation mishap investigation boards
- Serve as the liaison between flying squadrons and medical services
