Job Description

Hillsborough County Public Schools (HCPS) is a leading educational institution committed to providing high-quality education and nutrition services to its student population. As part of its commitment to fostering a safe and healthy learning environment, HCPS operates a comprehensive Student Nutrition Services (SNS) program. The SNS program is dedicated to preparing and serving nutritious, appealing meals and snacks to students and staff across various school sites within the district. HCPS upholds principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion, ensuring fair employment practices and equal opportunities for all individuals. Known for its progressive policies, the district also values professionalism, responsibility, and community engagement among its employees.

The role of Cafeteria Manager 4 within Student Nutrition Services is a prestigious and vital leadership position that involves overseeing the preparation and serving of meals at a large school cafeteria, catering to meal equivalents ranging from 1200 to 1599 daily. This position is responsible for managing clerical staff and subordinate professional personnel, ensuring high standards in food quality, safety, and customer service. As a supervisor, the Cafeteria Manager must carry out responsibilities in compliance with local, state, and federal regulations including guidelines from the USDA, Florida Agriculture Department, and Hillsborough County Health Department.

The Cafeteria Manager 4 leads their team in administering an efficient, well-coordinated food service operation that aligns with nutritional standards and culinary best practices such as the Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) system. The role demands expertise in managing food preparation, inventory control, and maintaining accurate documentation and records. The position also involves staff training, assigning duties, evaluating performance, and fostering positive relationships with students, teachers, administrators, and parents.

In addition to managing day-to-day operations, this role encompasses essential supervisory expectations such as hiring, training, performance appraisal, and conflict resolution. The manager must plan and organize work activities, develop and implement cost-saving measures to work within approved budgets, and lead projects to completion in a timely manner. Communication is critical, as the Cafeteria Manager liaises with principals and school staff to assure a consistent, high-quality nutrition program across multiple sites.

The ideal candidate will have a minimum of five years of progressively responsible experience in food service, including at least three years in a management or supervisory capacity. Serv-Safe certification is mandatory for this position. Candidates should possess strong skills in reading, writing, and interpreting business and technical material, as well as basic mathematical competencies to manage budgets and calculate measurements accurately. Furthermore, candidates must exhibit problem-solving abilities, proficiency with relevant computer software, and meet physical demands such as standing, lifting, and other environmental challenges inherent to kitchen operations.

This position also requires completion of the HCPS Cafeteria Manager Intern Program and acknowledges that managers may be required to be available for extended hours or emergency situations. The role is essential within the district’s operations and contributes significantly to promoting student health and wellness through effective nutrition services. The salary and benefits are competitive, providing security and growth opportunities within one of Florida's largest school districts.
