Job Description
Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) is a world-renowned nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing knowledge and understanding of the ocean through innovative research and exceptional education programs. Established as one of the leading oceanographic research institutions in the United States, WHOI plays a pivotal role in ocean science, engineering, and education. The institution operates a state-of-the-art fleet of research vessels, advanced laboratories, and a talented community of scientists, engineers, and support staff committed to exploring new frontiers in oceanography, climate science, marine biology, and related fields. WHOI fosters a collaborative and inclusive work environment, emphasizing safety, integrity, and continuous learning.
The Mess Attendant position at WHOI offers an exciting opportunity to work onboard one of their research vessels, contributing to the smooth operation of the galley and support areas while ensuring a clean, sanitary, and efficient environment for all personnel at sea. This role is a vital part of the ship’s steward team, reporting directly to the Steward and primarily responsible for maintaining the cleanliness of the mess decks, galley, and related spaces. The position requires STCW Basic Training and VPDSD certification, reflecting WHOI's commitment to safety and compliance with international maritime standards. The position is scheduled to begin on September 18, 2026.
As a Mess Attendant, you will be engaged in various tasks that ensure the galley functions efficiently during extended periods at sea. Your responsibilities include cleaning and maintaining all sanitary galley areas, including utensils, equipment, storerooms, and refrigeration compartments, helping to prepare fruits, vegetables, and other foods for cooking, while assisting with the organization and stowing of galley supplies. You will help maintain hygiene standards critical for the health and safety of everyone onboard, particularly important under the often challenging conditions at sea.
WHOI values candidates who can work effectively under adverse weather conditions, adapt to living and working in confined quarters, and fulfill the demanding physical and mental tasks required aboard ship. The role involves working extended hours, sometimes over 12 hours per day, and participating in emergency drills to ensure preparedness. The position pays an hourly rate of $25.89, with compensation based on hours worked and eligibility for a comprehensive benefits package. WHOI also emphasizes equal employment opportunities and strives to maintain a discriminatory-free workplace, supporting diversity and inclusion in all aspects of employment.
This role is ideal for individuals with a high school diploma or equivalent and experience as a Mess Attendant on similar vessels, or equivalent work experience. Maintaining a valid U.S. Coast Guard Merchant Mariner's Credential endorsed as a Food Handler and an unexpired USCG medical certificate is required. WHOI looks for reliable professionals able to pass mandatory drug screening and meet the physical standards necessary for working safely on board. Joining WHOI means being part of a respected institution dedicated to marine science and exploration while enjoying a rewarding career at sea in a supportive and professional environment.
