Job Description

Mercy Retirement and Care Center, situated in Oakland, California, is a reputable senior care facility dedicated to providing compassionate and comprehensive services to the elderly community. For over four decades, it has built a legacy rooted in respect, integrity, and community service. Closely affiliated with this center is the Mercy Brown Bag Program, a vital initiative that extends the center's mission into the broader Alameda County area by supplying fresh and healthy groceries to low-income seniors. Since its founding by the senior residents of Mercy Retirement and Care Center, the Brown Bag Program has evolved into a crucial resource serving more than 10,000 older adults twice a month, helping to combat food insecurity amidst rising inflation and demographic changes.

The Mercy Brown Bag Program thrives on a dedicated team and over 500 volunteers who share a commitment to improving the quality of life for seniors in the East Bay community. The program emphasizes collaboration, compassion, and innovation. It embraces a culture of excellence that not only values the well-being of those it serves but also fosters a supportive and respectful environment where team members can develop and thrive.

The Community Coordinator and Driver role is a critical position within the Mercy Brown Bag Program. This role combines logistical expertise with community engagement, requiring an individual who is passionate about service and adept at managing multiple responsibilities. The successful candidate will be responsible for fulfilling grocery orders, operating delivery vehicles including 20-foot box trucks and mobile farmers market vehicles, and coordinating distribution at multiple sites daily. They must demonstrate strong organizational skills to curate pallets containing 12 to 15 food items per site and maintain accurate inventory records.

In addition to delivery and logistics, this role serves as the face of Mercy Brown Bag at distribution sites, working closely with partner organizations’ staff and volunteers to ensure smooth and respectful distribution of groceries. Maintaining vehicle safety and cleanliness, adhering to regulations from various local and federal agencies, and assisting with site inspections are also important aspects of the job. The role demands excellent interpersonal and communication skills, strong attention to detail, and the ability to work collaboratively.

Pay for this hourly position ranges from $25.00 to $27.00, depending on experience, skills, and training. Individuals interested in contributing to the mission of serving vulnerable seniors within the San Francisco Bay Area will find this an enriching and impactful opportunity. Mercy Brown Bag is seeking candidates who demonstrate a commitment to its mission, culture of excellence, and strategic goals, with readiness to participate in ongoing training and special organizational events. Applicants who are motivated to make a tangible difference in the lives of elderly community members are encouraged to apply and join this compassionate team dedicated to transforming age through food security and community care.
