Job Description

John Muir Health is a leading healthcare organization that is committed to providing high-quality and compassionate care to the communities it serves. With a focus on innovation, patient-centered treatment, and integrated care services, John Muir Health operates a wide range of facilities including hospitals, outpatient centers, and specialty care units. The Acute Psychiatric Hospital at John Muir Health is dedicated to delivering comprehensive mental health care with a strong emphasis on acute psychiatric services.

John Muir Health's Acute Psychiatric Hospital is seeking a dedicated Mental Health Professional to join its dynamic Social Service Department. This role is integral to the provision of acute inpatient psychiatric care, serving as the primary clinician responsible for treatment and coordination of care for assigned patients within an integrated treatment team led by the attending physician. The Mental Health Professional position is a vital part of the multidisciplinary team and focuses on delivering evidence-based psychosocial interventions to support patients through their recovery journey.

The Mental Health Professional provides acute care treatment including conducting thorough psychosocial assessments to understand the psychological and social status of patients. They are responsible for facilitating individual and family therapy sessions that help patients and their families navigate the challenges associated with mental health conditions. Group therapy sessions are also a key component, offering peer support and structured therapeutic environments that foster healing and personal growth. Safety planning is another critical responsibility to ensure the well-being of patients during their hospital stay.

In addition to therapy and assessments, the Mental Health Professional plays a central role in discharge planning, ensuring that patients transition smoothly from the hospital to the community or other levels of care. This involves coordinating with community agencies and resources to provide aftercare follow-up, critical for sustained recovery and relapse prevention. Collaboration and communication with treatment team members, including psychiatrists, nurses, social workers, and other professionals, are essential for comprehensive patient care.

The position requires strong clinical skills, a compassionate approach, and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced inpatient setting. The Mental Health Professional reports directly to the Social Service Supervisor and is expected to maintain professional standards and compliance with all relevant licensing and regulatory requirements. This role offers an opportunity to impact lives positively while working in a supportive and well-established healthcare organization.

The work shift for this position is from 8:00 AM to 5:30 PM with no waiver, and the job is classified as hourly with a pay range of $55.27 to $76.50 per hour. Pay is commensurate with experience and licensure, and adjustments are made based on the local market if hired outside the Bay Area. Scheduled weekly hours total 24. As part of John Muir Health, the Mental Health Professional benefits from access to ongoing professional development, a collaborative work environment, and comprehensive employee benefits.

This position requires a Master's degree and at least one year of experience in behavioral health within inpatient or residential treatment settings. Specific licensure requirements apply depending on the hire or transfer date, including California Board of Behavioral Sciences credentials such as Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), Associate Clinical Social Worker (ACSW), Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), or Associate Marriage and Family Therapist (AMFT). Candidates must also hold certifications like Basic Life Support (BLS) and complete CPI Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Training within 30 days of hire.

Joining John Muir Health as a Mental Health Professional means becoming part of a compassionate team dedicated to mental health excellence. This role offers a meaningful career path with opportunities for growth, impactful patient interaction, and involvement in advancing mental health practices through integrated care delivery.
