Job Description

This service allows parents and guardians to participate in YMCA programs or activities while their children are cared for in a secure setting.

The Child Watch Attendant role at the YMCA Child Watch and Youth Activity Center is a vital position designed to ensure the safety and enrichment of children during their stay. This role involves constant supervision and engagement with children during their playtime, ensuring they are safe, happy, and well cared for. The attendant will be responsible for adhering to strict guidelines related to child safety, abuse prevention, and hygienic practices while encouraging positive interactions and developmental activities for children of various age groups.

The attendant's duties include managing high-risk activities, completing abuse risk management training, and maintaining clear communication with parents and coordinators regarding children's progress and any concerns that arise. This position demands a compassionate and attentive individual who is dedicated to creating welcoming and nurturing environments that align with the YMCA's core values, including inclusivity, hope, nurture, and determination. This full-time or part-time position embraces an active work environment with moderate physical demands and requires staff to handle minor lifting and the ability to observe and respond to children’s needs vigilantly. Training in CPR/AED, first aid, and bloodborne pathogens is required and supports the overall commitment to health and safety that the YMCA upholds.

Job Requirements

  • must be at least 18 years old
  • high school diploma or equivalent
  • ability to provide safe supervision for children from infant to fourteen years old
  • completion of abuse risk management training
  • ability to follow mandated abuse reporting requirements
  • good communication skills
  • ability to remain physically active during shifts
  • willingness to handle toileting and diaper changes
  • ability to maintain cleanliness and safety standards
  • availability to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends

Job Qualifications

  • CPR/AED, First Aid, Oxygen, and Blood Borne Pathogen training is required within 60 days of employment
  • excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills
  • ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all community social and economic segments
  • previous customer service, childcare, or other related experience
  • basic knowledge of computers

Job Duties

  • Adhere to policies related to boundaries with youth
  • complete required abuse risk management training
  • adhere to procedures related to managing high-risk activities and supervising youth
  • report suspicious or inappropriate behaviors and policy violations
  • follow mandated abuse reporting requirements
  • assist with daily activities for children, guide them through these activities, and remain active with them through all activities
  • responsible for the children's safety, supervision, and activities in the room
  • communicate child progress and/or problems with parents as needed
  • maintain the room's orderliness, ensuring daily sanitizing/cleaning and basic health and safety codes are met
  • communicate with the Childwatch Coordinator about any concerns, maintenance issues, and supply needs
  • ensure accurate sign-in/out log and file log sheets are completed at the end of each shift
  • build relationships with members and help members connect with the YMCA
  • change diapers or assist with toileting
