Childrens Hospital of The Kings Daughters (CHKD) is a renowned pediatric hospital committed to providing exceptional healthcare services to children and their families. Located in Norfolk, Virginia, CHKD specializes in offering comprehensive care through its various departments, including the Cancer and Blood Disorders Center. The hospital is dedicated to improving the quality of life for its young patients by integrating advanced medical treatments with compassionate support services. The Medical Social Worker - Specialty Programs (CCBDC) at CHKD plays a pivotal role in supporting patients facing complex biopsychosocial challenges originating from acute or chronic illness, disability, or trauma. This full-time, day shift position involves conducting thorough assessments with patients and their caregivers to gather psychosocial histories, which form the basis for individualized treatment plans. The Medical Social Worker provides vital counseling, case management, and resource coordination services, working closely with interdisciplinary teams to deliver integrated care tailored to each patient's unique situation.
In this role, the Medical Social Worker offers continuous psychosocial evaluation and emotional support to patients and families coping with chronic diseases, ensuring they receive comprehensive help to enhance their quality of life. Responsibilities extend to mental health evaluations, crisis intervention, discharge planning, and facilitating community resource referrals. The professional also serves as a mediator between patients, families, medical staff, and external agencies, advocating for patient needs within various settings and supporting access to medical accommodations through school and employer collaboration.
The Cancer and Blood Disorders Center requires the Medical Social Worker to address specific challenges related to hematology and oncology patients, including adjustment to illness, relationship issues, vocational and educational concerns, conflict resolution, and decisions regarding advance directives and end-of-life care. Additionally, the role includes participation in hospital-wide activities such as precepting new staff, supporting interns and supervisees, providing coverage for various clinical and crisis needs, and maintaining accurate documentation to support quality improvement initiatives.
A current Virginia license as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) and a Master’s degree in Social Work from an accredited institution are mandatory. Experience in evidence-based treatments with children and families, strong interpersonal and communication skills, and the ability to function effectively within a multidisciplinary team are essential qualifications. This position also requires a commitment to ongoing professional development and engagement with community and professional organizations related to chronic illness and social work practice.
At CHKD, the working environment is primarily inpatient with minimal exposure to dust or extreme temperatures, fostering a safe and supportive atmosphere for both staff and patients. The Medical Social Worker also participates in on-call duties to meet the dynamic needs of the Hematology/Oncology service line as directed by the department leadership. This role is critical to the holistic care model that CHKD champions, ensuring that children with cancer and blood disorders receive not only medical treatment but also the psychosocial support they need to navigate their health journeys successfully.

Job Requirements
- Graduate of an accredited college or university with a Master’s degree in Social Work
- Current Virginia license as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW)
- Experience with implementing evidence-based treatments with children and families
- Exceptional interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
- Ability to work within a multidisciplinary team
- Willingness to participate in on-call duties
- Ability to manage caseloads and documentation

Job Duties
- Provides ongoing psychosocial assessment and counseling to chronic disease patients and families
- Completes mental health evaluations and makes appropriate diagnoses and recommendations
- Conducts biopsychosocial assessments for medical intervention suitability
- Provides casework services including counseling, crisis intervention, and discharge planning
- Offers outpatient therapy for education, emotional support, and chronic illness management
- Mediates between patients, families, and staff
- Facilitates community agency referrals and collaborates with schools and employers for medical accommodations
- Participates in interdisciplinary care planning and collaboration
- Completes needs assessments and provides resources and interventions
- Advocates on behalf of patients with local, state, and federal agencies
- Provides patient and family education throughout all care phases
- Collaborates with other hospitals and programs for best practices
