The role of a Medical Scribe at Oak Street Health, also known internally as a Clinical Informatics Specialist (CIS), is vital to supporting the efforts of primary care providers. This position focuses on providing accurate and detailed clinical documentation that allows providers to focus on delivering exceptional patient care rather than the administrative burden of note-taking. The Medical Scribe accompanies the provider through the entire patient care journey, from morning huddles to the completion of after-visit summaries, ensuring that every detail of the patient encounter is recorded promptly and precisely.
Beyond traditional scribal duties, Medical Scribes at Oak Street Health become experts in the company’s value-based care model, chronic disease care documentation, and medical coding such as ICD-10 and CPT. Their role supports clinical documentation improvement, helping providers identify and address care gaps effectively. Alongside documentation, they also assist with administrative tasks such as placing orders, referrals, and handling care team tasks. Job Requirements
- high school diploma or equivalent
- knowledge of medical terminology and common medications
- prior clinical experience including shadowing or volunteering strongly preferred
- advanced listening and communication skills
- strong computer literacy
- ability to adapt to new workflows
- ability to type 70+ words per minute strongly preferred
- ability to take direction and work as part of a patient care team
- ability to be a self-starter
- excellent attendance and ability to work in-person at clinics
- ability to commit to at least one year in role
- ability to work full time (~40-45 hours per week) with predictable hours and breaks
- compliance with hospital and Oak Street Health policies including HIPAA
- US work authorization
Job Qualifications
- knowledge of medical terminology and common medications
- prior clinical experience such as shadowing or volunteering strongly preferred
- prior scribe or transcription experience preferred but not required
- advanced listening and communication skills
- strong computer literacy and ability to learn new technical workflows
- fluency in Spanish, Polish, Russian, or other community languages where indicated
- ability to adapt to new workflows and quickly learn new concepts and skills
- ability and willingness to take direction and be a team member providing patient care
- ability to be a self-starter within role scope
- excellent job attendance including ability to work in-person in clinics
- ability to commit to at least one year in role, with two or more years ideal
- compliance with hospital and Oak Street Health policies including HIPAA
- US work authorization
Job Duties
- joining the provider in the exam room to observe patient visits
- documenting patient encounters including history of present illness, assessment, plan, and physical exam
- assigning appropriate CPT and ICD-10 codes
- preparing after visit summaries
- consulting with provider to ensure accurate and specific documentation
- requesting and reviewing medical records to support clinical documentation improvement
- leveraging population health tools to aid documentation improvement
- preparing for and supporting daily huddles and documentation reviews
- placing orders and referrals
- addressing administrative tasks and supporting the care team
- performing other duties as assigned
