The Medical Scribe (Clinical Informatics Specialist) role at Oak Street Health is designed to support primary care providers by managing clinical documentation, enabling providers to focus on delivering high-quality patient care. Medical Scribes work closely with providers throughout the patient care journey – from planning daily patient visits in morning huddles to observing, documenting, and supporting next steps after the encounter. This role goes beyond traditional scribing by contributing as experts in clinical documentation, value-based care models, and chronic condition management, including coding standards such as ICD-10 and CPT. The Medical Scribe acts as a vital liaison between clinical operations and accurate documentation, ensuring precision and compliance with healthcare standards.

Job Requirements
- Knowledge of medical terminology and common medications
- Prior clinical experience preferred
- Advanced listening and communication skills
- Strong computer literacy
- Ability to adapt to new workflows and learn new concepts
- Ability and willingness to take direction and be a team member
- Ability to be a self-starter
- Excellent job attendance and ability to work in-person
- Ability to commit at least 1 year (2+ ideal)
- Ability to work 40-45 hours per week during clinic hours
- Compliance with hospital and Oak Street Health policies including HIPAA
- US work authorization
Job Qualifications
- Knowledge of medical terminology and common medications, either from pre-medical degree or prior clinical experience
- Prior clinical experience including shadowing and/or volunteering preferred
- Prior scribe or transcription experience preferred
- Advanced listening and communication skills
- Strong computer literacy and ability to learn new technical workflows
- Fluency in Spanish, Polish, Russian, or other languages spoken by communities served where indicated
- Ability to type 70+ words per minute preferred
- Ability and willingness to take direction and be a member of a patient care team
- Ability to be a self-starter within role scope
- Excellent job attendance and ability to work in-person in clinics
- Ability to commit to at least 1 year in role (2+ preferred)
- Ability to work approximately 40-45 hours per week during clinic hours with predictable schedule
- Compliance with hospital and Oak Street Health policies including HIPAA
- US work authorization
Job Duties
- Joining the provider in the exam room to observe patient visits
- Documenting patient encounters in a structured note including history of present illness, assessment, plan, and physical exam
- Assigning appropriate CPT and ICD-10 codes
- Preparing after visit summaries
- Consulting with provider to ensure accurate and specific documentation
- Requesting and reviewing medical records
- Leveraging population health tools to support clinical documentation improvement
- Preparing for and supporting daily huddles and clinical documentation reviews
- Placing orders and referrals
- Addressing tasks
- Supporting the care team with additional responsibilities related to clinical documentation
- Other duties as assigned
