The role of Medical Scribe or Clinical Informatics Specialist (CIS) at Oak Street Health is a vital position that supports primary care providers by managing clinical documentation. This enables providers to concentrate fully on delivering high-quality care during patient visits. The Medical Scribe works closely with the healthcare provider throughout the entire patient care journey, including planning daily visits, documenting the clinical encounter in real time, and assisting with follow-up actions. This role extends beyond traditional scribing by incorporating aspects of clinical documentation improvement and administrative support to optimize patient care.
In addition to observing and meticulously recording patient encounters, Medical Scribes at Oak Street Health become experts in the company’s value-based care approach. They learn to accurately document chronic conditions, use ICD-10 and CPT coding, and identify care gaps to support provider efforts in delivering comprehensive care. Scribes receive extensive training on clinical workflows, population health data, preventative care strategies, and team-based care models, which enhances their ability to contribute to care quality and efficiency.

The pay range for this Medical Scribe position is between $17.00 and $28.46 per hour, with the actual salary depending on factors like experience, education, and geographical location. The role is eligible for additional incentives such as bonuses and commissions. Job Requirements
- Knowledge of medical terminology and common medications
- Prior clinical experience including shadowing or volunteering preferred
- Advanced listening and communication skills
- Strong computer literacy and ability to learn new technical workflows
- Ability to adapt to new workflows and learn new concepts and skills
- Ability and willingness to take direction and work as part of a care team
- Ability to be a self-starter
- Excellent job attendance and ability to work in-person
- Ability to commit to at least 1 year in role
- Ability to work 40-45 hours per week during clinic hours
- Compliance with hospital and company policies including HIPAA
- US work authorization
Job Qualifications
- Knowledge of medical terminology and common medications from pre-medical degree or prior clinical experience
- Prior clinical experience including shadowing or volunteering preferred
- Prior scribe or transcription experience preferred but not required
- Advanced listening and communication skills
- Strong computer literacy and ability to learn new technical workflows
- Fluency in Spanish, Polish, Russian, or other languages spoken by the community preferred
- Ability to type 70+ words per minute preferred
- Ability to adapt to new workflows and learn new concepts and skills
- Ability and willingness to take direction and work as a team member providing patient care
- Ability to be a self-starter within role scope
- Excellent job attendance and ability to work in-person in clinics
- Ability to commit to at least 1 year in role, 2+ years ideal
Job Duties
- Joining the provider in the exam room to observe patient visits
- Documenting patient encounters in a structured note including history of present illness, assessment, plan, and physical exam
- Assigning appropriate CPT and ICD-10 codes
- Preparing after visit summaries
- Consulting with provider to ensure accurate and specific documentation
- Requesting and reviewing medical records
- Leveraging population health tools to support clinical documentation improvement
- Preparing for and supporting daily huddles and clinical documentation reviews
- Placing orders and referrals
- Addressing tasks
- Supporting the care team with responsibilities related to clinical documentation
- Performing other duties as assigned
