The Patient Care Unit Clerical and Receptionist role at VUMC offers a unique opportunity to support vital patient care functions. This position primarily provides clerical and receptionist services to patients, families, visitors, staff, physicians, and departments that support patient care. The employee plays a crucial role in facilitating smooth workflow within the unit, ensuring effective communication, and supporting the appropriate use of technology. Regular guidance is provided to assist with these duties while encouraging independence and professional development.

Responsibilities include processing orders according to established guidelines, managing computer downtime procedures, and entering and updating patient information to ensure accuracy and currency. This role also involves maintaining unit logs, scheduling follow-up appointments, and handling discharge clerical tasks. Additionally, the employee responds to patient calls and requests, providing clear and current information to families, visitors, and staff.

Technological tools such as telephone systems, patient call systems, paging devices, fax and copy machines, scanning equipment, unit-specific monitoring devices, and pneumatic tube systems are integral to this role, facilitating the efficient flow of communication, equipment, and supplies. The role requires managing and ordering supplies with cost-effectiveness in mind. Duties may evolve, with additional tasks assigned as needed, offering variety and opportunities for skill expansion.

This role is suitable for individuals with less than one year of relevant work experience, who hold a high school diploma or GED, and are eager to contribute to a top-tier healthcare institution.
