Job Description

St. Charles Health System is a multi-hospital healthcare organization dedicated to creating America’s healthiest community through a unified vision, mission, and values that emphasize accountability, caring, and teamwork. Known for providing comprehensive laboratory services spanning blood collection, processing, testing, and reporting, St. Charles Health System supports both its internal multi-hospital network and the broader outreach community. The institution’s mission centers on love, compassion, and the delivery of better health, better care, and better value, reflecting its deep commitment to patient-centered services and clinical excellence. As a healthcare leader, St. Charles Health System continually embraces innovation and improvement methodologies such as Value Improvement Practice (VIP-Lean) principles to enhance laboratory services and operational efficiency, ensuring quality and safety for caregivers, patients, and guests alike.

The Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) and Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) positions at St. Charles Health System are integral roles within the Laboratory Department, reporting directly to supervisors, managers, or directors. These roles involve performing, interpreting, and reporting clinical laboratory tests on various human biological specimens, upholding rigorous laboratory policies, procedures, and quality standards. The MLS role typically commands a salary range between $36.99 and $55.49 per hour, whereas the MLT role typically ranges from $29.37 to $44.05 per hour, both reflecting the specialized skills required.

The MLS is responsible for complex laboratory analysis, ensuring specimen integrity, performing quality control and assurance, troubleshooting instrumentation, and collaborating with healthcare providers to interpret results and improve testing processes. The MLS supports clinical care by offering expert guidance on testing procedures, specimen handling, and result interpretation, contributing as a subject matter expert within their specialty. This role also emphasizes ethical practices, regulatory compliance, and confidentiality, alongside active participation in continuous improvement initiatives and the maintenance of a safe working environment.

Similarly, the MLT position, which may require completion of military medical laboratory training or accredited degrees, supports laboratory testing with responsibilities that include specimen processing, quality checks, instrument maintenance, and timely documentation of results. The MLT plays a key role in operational workflow by ensuring effective communication with ordering providers, addressing specimen adequacy issues, and following stringent safety and compliance standards. Both roles require proficiency in blood sample collection techniques and a comprehensive understanding of laboratory safety protocols, including the proper use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

Working at St. Charles Health System offers professionals an opportunity to be part of an organization that values diversity, teamwork, and continuous growth. Both MLS and MLT roles function as champions of change, actively engaging in research, development, and validation of new testing methodologies that meet evolving clinical demands. The commitment to high standards of professionalism, patient care, and corporate integrity ensures that employees are supported in delivering exceptional laboratory services that contribute to the well-being of the community. These relief positions feature variable shifts, reflecting the need for flexible scheduling within the dynamic healthcare environment.
