The Medical Laboratory Scientist 3 is entrusted with performing all assigned high-complexity laboratory testing and data reporting for their designated area. This role is critical in supporting patient diagnosis and treatment by ensuring accurate and timely laboratory results. Employees in this capacity act as subject matter experts within their specific field, troubleshooting complex technical issues and mentoring less experienced staff, including students, residents, and new employees. Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant science
  • Minimum five years of high-complexity clinical laboratory-related experience
  • Appropriate certification such as MLS via ASCP or equivalent
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, computerized environment
  • Ability to lift 20 lbs and perform repetitive motions
  • Commitment to personal protective equipment use and safety in the lab
  • Ability to interact effectively and respectfully with colleagues and patients
  • Willingness to obtain and document continuing education
  • Availability to perform technical charge duties as needed
  • Adherence to workplace policies including code of conduct and ICARE values

Job Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in relevant science
  • A minimum of five years of high-complexity clinical laboratory-related experience
  • Certification as Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) via ASCP or equivalent certifications such as Medical Technologist (MT) via AMT, or specialty certifications such as Blood Bank (BB), Chemistry (C), Cytogenetics (CG), Cytotechnologist (CT), Hematology (H), Microbiology (M), Molecular Biology (MB), Specialty in Cytometry (SCYM) via ASCP, or HLA certifications (CHT/CHS) via ACHI
  • Proven ability to instruct and evaluate staff and students
  • Demonstrated proficiency in troubleshooting and quality control
  • Experience in preparing and presenting educational materials and quality improvement initiatives
  • Commitment to adhering to safety protocols and laboratory standards
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills for effective collaboration

Job Duties

  • Demonstrates proficiency in all duties as defined in the role of Medical Technologist II
  • Serves as an expert within the assigned field of responsibility
  • Instructs students, residents, and new employees and evaluates their performance within established deadlines
  • Participates in presenting case studies or in-services
  • Oversees and maintains a clean, clutter-free and well-organized area of responsibility
  • Prepares and presents one inter-laboratory continuing education presentation per year
  • Participates in and presents quality improvement initiatives accomplished in the laboratory including inventory management, facilitating instrument or workflow processes, quality or safety officer roles, mentoring, and assisting in inspection preparation
  • Utilizes required personal protective equipment and adheres to laboratory policies and procedures
  • Performs quality control procedures, preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, and documents all actions
  • Maintains neat, clean, and well-stocked work areas
  • Ensures proper specimen labeling and processes specimens accordingly
  • Meets turnaround time expectations by prioritizing and organizing workload
  • Utilizes time efficiently to complete tasks and assist colleagues
  • Obtains and documents 12 hours of continuing education yearly and prepares/presents continuing education sessions
  • Accepts or volunteers for method evaluations, new procedure developments, special projects, and leads in process improvements
  • Performs tech-in-charge duties as required and oversees lab operations
  • Reviews lab results, calls critical results timely, and ensures accurate data entry and review of results before release
