Job Description
Houston Methodist The Woodlands Hospital is a premier acute-care hospital located at the intersection of Interstate 45 and Texas State Highway 242. Opened in June 2017, this full-service healthcare facility spans 725,000 square feet and offers a comprehensive range of medical services paralleling those provided at Houston Methodist's flagship hospital in the Texas Medical Center. The campus is home to advanced medical office buildings housing specialty centers including a Breast Care Center, Cancer Center, infusion center, heart and vascular services, neurology, orthopedics and sports medicine, rehabilitation services, wellness services, an outpatient laboratory, and various multispecialty physician practices.
In January 2022, Houston Methodist The Woodlands further expanded with the opening of the Healing Tower, a $250 million addition that introduced 106 new beds focused on medical-surgical and women's services, nine new operating rooms, and enhancements to the endoscopy center, emergency department, and diagnostic imaging department, including a specialized neurodiagnostic and interventional center. This growth underscores Houston Methodist's commitment to providing state-of-the-art medical care in a patient-centered environment. The hospital emphasizes collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement, making it a leading employer in the healthcare industry within the Houston metropolitan area.
The Medical Laboratory Scientist role at Houston Methodist is a full-time position, specifically focused on the night shift, from 8 pm to 6:30 am. This position is critical to the daily operations of the hospital's laboratory, where the Medical Laboratory Scientist performs both routine and complex analyses that require a deep understanding of laboratory principles, techniques, and equipment. The role demands strong critical thinking and judgment skills to solve technical issues and ensures rapid and accurate processing of specimens to deliver quality laboratory results efficiently and cost-effectively.
This job is non-exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA), and the candidate is expected to maintain professional standards while working independently with minimal supervision. The Medical Laboratory Scientist also plays a vital role in educating students and new employees, actively participates in organizational and laboratory initiatives, and contributes to maintaining a positive and collaborative work environment that supports optimal departmental outcomes. The role requires meticulous attention to detail, strong communication skills, and proficiency in various computer systems including Hospital/Laboratory Information Systems and office software for accurate record-keeping.
The position demands certification eligibility upon entry, with the expectation to earn one of the required professional certifications within 18 months of employment. These certifications include credentials from the Board of Certification (ASCP), American Medical Technologists (AMT), National Credentialing Agency (NCA), American Board of Histocompatibility and Immunogenetics (ABHI), or American Society for Microbiology (RM) depending on the specialty. The role also involves multitasking in a fast-paced environment, adapting to ongoing priorities, and contributing to quality control, instrument calibration, and test validation procedures.
In summary, Houston Methodist The Woodlands offers an excellent opportunity for a dedicated Medical Laboratory Scientist to join a dynamic and expanding healthcare organization committed to excellence in patient care and professional development. The position not only requires technical expertise but also emphasizes teamwork, continuous learning, and adherence to quality and safety standards, making it ideal for candidates seeking a challenging and rewarding career in clinical laboratory science.
