Job Description
Medical Education & Research Institute (MERI) is a respected non-profit organization dedicated to advancing medical education through providing specialized bio-skills lab environments essential for surgical and medical training for healthcare professionals. Located centrally in Memphis, Tennessee, MERI uniquely supports state-of-the-art, hands-on training and educational events for physicians, nurses, and medical practitioners from across the United States and internationally. The organization’s mobile training capabilities allow it to deliver cutting-edge training beyond its Memphis base, reaching healthcare providers nationwide, including remote areas such as Alaska and Hawaii. A vital part of MERI's success is its exclusive partnership with the Genesis Legacy Whole Body Donation Foundation, enabling the organization to coordinate all aspects of medical training while using donated human cadaveric tissue for realistic surgical simulation and training.
Currently, MERI is expanding its mobile support capabilities to meet the evolving demands of the medical industry. This expansion presents an exciting opportunity for adventurous and energetic individuals to join the team as Mobile Transport Specialists. This role primarily involves traveling extensively across the central U.S. and other locations to set up and support complex surgical training events. Mobile Transport Specialists travel in MERI-owned vehicles, operate equipment, and assist with the setup and teardown of surgical lab environments at various venues such as hotel ballrooms, convention centers, and hospital surgical centers.
In this role, specialists will be responsible for transporting sensitive surgical instruments, lighting, x-ray machinery, personal protective equipment, and carefully handling cadaveric specimens. They will provide critical hands-on support during medical training sessions to ensure a smooth and effective educational experience for all participants. This position requires physical stamina and responsibility, as it involves lifting heavy equipment and managing the proper care and handling of human tissue specimens. This is an ideal opportunity for individuals interested in biosciences and human anatomy, even without prior medical training, as MERI provides comprehensive on-the-job training to develop the necessary skills.
The Mobile Transport Specialist position is salary-based with a starting pay of $18.72 per hour ($21.72 per hour for those holding a Class B Commercial Driver's License), plus an additional $5 per hour travel pay for time spent traveling or working at offsite events. Employees receive a daily meal per diem of $69 during travel days, and overtime pay at 1.5 times the regular rate is common during prolonged travel periods. Additionally, merit-based annual bonuses and salary increases reward performance excellence.
This role requires a commitment to frequent travel, approximately 75% of the time, with trips lasting from a few days up to two weeks or more. Drivers need excellent driving skills, a clean record, and the ability or willingness to obtain a Class B CDL, a requirement for operating MERI’s larger transport trucks. MERI supports employees through this licensing process. Furthermore, the job demands physical capabilities such as standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting up to 100 pounds, and strong communication skills to collaborate effectively with training teams, sponsors, and event coordinators.
Joining MERI means becoming part of an organization with a meaningful mission aimed at improving medical education and patient outcomes through practical training. Employees benefit from an engaging work culture, continuous learning opportunities, and comprehensive benefits including health insurance coverage, retirement plans, and more. For medical professionals and enthusiastic learners alike, working as a Mobile Transport Specialist offers a unique blend of travel, medical education involvement, and career growth in a vital sector of healthcare education.
