Job Description

UC San Diego Health is a renowned academic health system located in the San Diego region, recognized for its commitment to excellence in patient care, biomedical research, education, and community service. It operates two university hospitals and multiple specialized centers, including the National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, Shiley Eye Institute, Sulpizio Cardiovascular Center, and the only Burn Center in the county, alongside numerous outpatient clinics. The organization values diversity and innovation, fostering a collaborative environment that supports continuous learning and improvement among its employees. The commitment to an inclusive workplace ensures that individuals from all backgrounds have the opportunity to contribute to and grow within the institution.

The Medical Assistant 2 position within the Triton Health and Wellness Primary Care at UCSD is a career appointment located on the UCSD campus in La Jolla. This role offers full-time employment with a 100% appointment percentage, Monday through Friday with 8-hour day shifts, and features a supportive, team-oriented work environment. The hiring pay scale ranges from $25.31 to $31.50 per hour, reflecting the budgeted salary based on factors including experience, education, and certifications.

This position is integral to the delivery of high-quality patient care, supporting a team of dedicated healthcare professionals who serve UCSD team members onsite. Under the direct supervision of the Clinic Manager and general guidance from providers and licensed nursing staff, the Medical Assistant performs both clinical and administrative tasks. Clinical duties involve patient rooming, taking vital signs, assisting with medical procedures, and performing venipuncture and specimen collection. Administrative responsibilities include managing patient flow, scheduling appointments, navigating electronic health records (particularly Epic with Cadence module preferred), maintaining exam rooms, stocking supplies, and ensuring compliance with infection control standards.

The role demands a candidate who is adaptable, proactive, and capable of thriving in a fast-paced clinical environment. The position supports a culture that values kindness, collaboration, and continuous quality improvement. Employees benefit from working alongside experienced providers in both Primary Care and Express Care settings, gaining valuable experience and opportunities for professional growth. The clinic observes a lunch break daily from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM, further supporting work-life balance.

Candidates must hold certification as a Medical Assistant (CMA) or have completed an accredited training program, possess current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification with a requirement to obtain BART within six months, and have at least one year of experience in a busy Primary Care or Family Medicine environment. Expertise in venipuncture and deep knowledge of medical terminology, universal precautions, and proper body mechanics are essential. Strong organizational skills and the ability to multitask and prioritize work efficiently while contributing positively within a team are also crucial.

Preferred qualifications include two years of medical assistant experience, familiarity with assisting in medical procedures such as splinting, injections, and wound care, experience with the Epic electronic health system, and knowledge of UCSD-specific workflows. Venipuncture certification is also favored.

UC San Diego Health emphasizes compliance with vaccination policies along with adherence to background checks and physical examinations. The institution maintains a smoke, tobacco, marijuana, and drug-free environment, underscoring its commitment to health and safety. As part of the hiring process, candidates must disclose any past misconduct related to workplace behavior to uphold the community’s standards of integrity and respect.

This role is a vital part of UC San Diego's effort to provide exceptional outpatient clinical services and uphold its reputation as a leader in academic health services, making a meaningful impact on patient outcomes and healthcare delivery within the community.
