The Medical Assistant Non-Certified (MA) position at Houston Methodist plays a critical role in supporting patient care within the clinical setting. This role is responsible for assisting healthcare providers with patient examinations, treatments, diagnostic studies, procedures, and follow-up care, all performed under the direct supervision of clinical or administrative leadership. The Medical Assistant supports the clinical team in ensuring efficient patient flow and adherence to quality and safety standards, including compliance with CLIA, HIPAA, NCQA, and government regulations. This position is integral in preparing treatment rooms, maintaining medical equipment and supplies, and handling administrative tasks such as scheduling patient appointments, verifying eligibility for care, and ensuring medical necessity compliance. Job Requirements

  • high school diploma or equivalent education
  • minimum of two years medical assistant experience in clinic or outpatient setting
  • certified medical assistant or equivalent certification within one year
  • BLS certification
  • proficient English speaking, reading, and writing
  • ability to communicate effectively with patients and clinical team
  • knowledge of medical procedures and equipment
  • ability to perform assigned clinical duties safely
  • proficiency in computer use for documentation
  • completion of required continuous training and certifications
  • adherence to HIPAA and CLIA standards
  • ability to work in a positive, collaborative team environment

Job Qualifications

  • high school diploma or equivalent education
  • two years of medical assistant experience in a clinic or outpatient setting
  • certified medical assistant through AAMA, NAHP, NCCT, NHA, or registered medical assistant or EMT within one year
  • basic life support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association
  • proficiency in English communication
  • knowledge of medical practice, equipment, and procedures
  • computer skills for documentation and work-related tasks
  • commitment to ongoing training and certification maintenance

Job Duties

  • assists providers with patient examinations, procedures, diagnostic studies, treatment, and dressing changes
  • performs general administrative duties including scheduling patient appointments, verifying eligibility, and ensuring medical necessity compliance
  • documents vital signs, medical history, medications review, and care administered in the electronic medical record
  • prepares treatment rooms and maintains medical equipment and supplies
  • communicates with patients, physicians, and team members to facilitate patient care
  • sterilizes instruments and ensures patient privacy and safety
  • contributes to quality improvement and patient satisfaction initiatives
